I think my next S&W will be a Mod. 14. Perhaps the members here can offer their opinions on whether to go for the 6-inch or the 8 3/8-inch barrel. The gun will shoot mostly wadcutters. I haven't seen the longer barrel model. Thanks for your input.

Go for the traditional, 6 inch length. That was the choice of target shooters. Mine is one of my favorites.

Is it strictly going from the safe to the range then back in the case and home to the safe or are you planning on holstering on occasion ?

Also do you just punch holes in paper targets or will it be called upon for some other type of service?

Im more of a 4" .357 Magnum fan but thats why S&W made so many variations.

I don't have a 6" .38. It will be a range gun, there are others that get holster use.

I have the 6" and it balances just right. IMHO the longer barrel would be too heavy in the front.

I have both. The longer tube was great for shooting silhouette targets back in the day but the 6 incher has the best balance.
