Them ole Smith & Wessons have been a bit hard on the budget this week.
It all started off when I wandered into the local sporting goods store and realized they had dozens of police turn in Smith & Wesson revolvers. I looked at 'em, and pawed just about all of them. Model 10, 13,19,65,66, etc.
Some were priced a bit beyond my level of interest, others are priced fairly well, especially if you kinda got an idea what to look for, already have some not so bad stocks laying around and ain't afraid to do some tweakin' and polishin' yerself.
So...after an insane amount of deliberation, I brought home a Model 65-1 It had some beat up Magna grips, and a pretty rough finish. Timing was good though, decent lock up, no endshake, no hammer push, buggered screws, etc. There were nicer guns, for sure...and the prices reflected that.
Then I went home...Thought about a Model 13 that was a bit more coarse. It had a pretty poor finish, out of time, and just generally rough, but...I got it for a good price, and it is a .357. I figgered it would clean up as a solid user.
Then...the third day, I came back to the Model 10s. I found a factory nickel 10-5 with a tapered barrel, and a very nice action, tight, good timing, etc. It's really the nicest of the three. It's caliber limits it's practical usefulness, but not it's fun factor.
By then, I was whipped up into a pretty good revolver frenzy, and found a fella that wanted to trade a lil ole J frame .22 with a six inch barrel for one of them tacticool type rifles. So...then I wound up with a very, very clean Model 35-1 in my possession. Truthfully, I wanna shoot it and take it out rabbit hunting, but it's so darn nice, it'd just about be a shame to mess it up.
I wanted to shoot 'em the last couple days, but ambient temp has been well below zero lately, and that rarely brings forth great shooting or fun times. I might have to wait another week or two. Maybe it'll give me time to reload a few hundred more rounds.
This last week has been hell on the budget, but it's sure been fun!
