Killing weeds/grass with salt water!

I have a long double wide gravel driveway. I use tractor supply .41% Glyphosphate concentrate. It's cheaper than Roundup now that Roundup's patents have ran out. I have a 25 gallon sprayer that I pull around with my garden tractor. I use it to edge the sidewalks, around the flower beds and trees, also around the barn and under the fences. When I'm done mowing I need very little trimming or weed eating. Glyphosphate will kill any grass or weed with chlorophyll in it.

If you want a more permanent kill there is a product called Pramitol or Prometron. It is a ground sterilizer that will last for more than a year. It is used in oil fields and junk yards.

I wouldn't use salt myself because of the possible run off or leaching with rains.

Epsom salt, vinegar and Dawn liquid detergent does a good job on my grass growing cracks.

1 gallon white vinegar
2 cups of Epsom salt
1/4 cup of blue Dawn liquid soap
Works good

Ortho's Groundclear is what you want. Roundup (Glyphosate) kills weeds well but it only kills what's alive at the time- new growth springs up shortly after. Groundclear contains not only Glyphosate, to kill what you've got, but also Imazapyr, which attacks weeds differently by working through the soil and preventing new growth. It stays in the soil, rendering it barren, for up to a year.

Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate

Possibly if something else kills the roots.

Then again it appears that burning is quick and could be done at a easy walk. If it only needs doing a couple times a growing season definitely not a problem.

Being a now retired 40 year welder I have sure had a lot of torches in my hand over the years,:D but I just never considered using one for that purpose.

For both above posters I assume you can get this at a place like "Tractor Supply"?

After you burn them off how long before they come back?

As Arty Johnson used to say VERRRRY INTERESTING!

They'll come back about as quick as they do with Roundup with one critical difference. Roundup doesn't kill seeds, so a weed in seed will propagate normally. Fire kills seeds and will gradually reduce the occurrence of weeds. I have problems with nasty, spreading bullheads. Try as I might, they manage to make burrs before I can get to them. Digging them up spreads the burrs and a vicious cycle begins. With the torch I can vaporize the plant and all the horrible stickers. It doesn't come back.

I haven't seen weed torches at TSC but they may be there. Mine is a Red Dragon brand I bought on Amazon a long time ago. Very well built with quality fittings. If you know torches of any kind you know crappy fittings will render an otherwise good torch unsafe in no time.

Salt water works great.
I tossed a bucket of salt water out and the grass did not grow for several months.
Did you ever have the feeling you should not have done that? As the water was flying in mid air between bucket and ground I thought to myself " I'll be dog gone.............shouldn't have tossed it there.........cant do anything about it now."

Lots of good info from good people!:D

Thanks to all that answered, I will figure out my options and proceed from there.

I'm now leaning toward the torch option (have chemicals in the garage now), going shopping with Mrs Lakesider tomorrow.
Will drop her off and head to Tractor Supply, I checked their site and they have them. If it checks out might come home with one.

Just what they should be playing with in the NW :D:D:D

Gotta love the no tape let/s fire this thing up anyhow attitude.

I was expecting a "hold my beer and watch this" moment.

But I do feel the need to go to HF :D:D:D

I like HF's coupons..

update-update-update

Again thanks to all they helped out.

I went with the torch and tried it out yesterday for the first time.

So far so good, that thing burns right down to ground and best bet the heat (it has plenty up to 500,000BTYs) penetrates farther down.

I got it at Tractor Supply and it only works with a BBQ size or bigger tank as it uses a bit of gas:D

Season is getting late up here but I will keep a watch and see how the treated area acts.

Of course this tool does have other applications up here in Northern NY. It will do a super job of melting ice if needed.
Meting lead will be no problem either
