Last week I bought a cherry 64-5 that has some really tired magnas on it. Even if they had been perfect, I hate the way magnas fit my hands, so they were destined to the box o' grips anyway.

So three days ago I order some Ahrends square butt smooth (no grooves) combats from Brownells.

Here's what I got today:

These are cocobolo, but a much lighter, more orange cocobolo than anything else I have ever got from Kim. All my other Ahrends are either very dark orange or almost red cocobolo. Still, I really, really like these. They are also very easy to conceal, even under a t shirt.

Also check out the grain match from side to side:

Nice very nice. Don't you just love it when a plan comes together.

That is the best looking 65 I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing this - now I'm seriously considering a set for my 681.

It's my new 64.

Here's my 65, also with Ahrends.

And that 65 looks pretty darn good too.

That orange cocobolo is sweet!! I just bought a set of N frame stocks from forum member KURAC, and they are beautifully figured and nicely colored with orangs streaks, but not quite that orange. They herring bone at the bottom of the grip like yours do.

Wyatt, great looking guns, and great looking grips! I have a question, the first picture has smooth grips, the secound finger grooved. Give me your pro and cons for both styles.

These are my first Ahrends without grooves.

Just practicing draws from the holster, I think the smooths feel a little bit better as there are no grooves to force your fingers into a certain place. Ahrends grips with grooves fit me really well, but those without may be even better fitting.

I won't make my final decision until IDPA season starts again or until the snow clears and the gun club dries up (whichever comes first) because evaluating stock fit should be done in a dynamic manner.

But I'll try to hit the indoor range this weekend and at least get some rounds downrange on the 64.

Very nice! I have a pair of the finger-groove combat cocobolos on a 4" 66-3 and they are just about perfect for my hand and fit the grip frame very well. Slim enough for CCW, but plenty to hold on to.
My experience with the K-frame Ahrends prompted me to buy the same stocks for a 6.5" 29-2 and the fit to the frame was...disappointing....a lot of metal standing proud over the wood. The same grips tried on a friends 629 produced the same results. I've read on other forums that his job with N-frame grips is not as consistent as the other frame sizes. Obviously, your mileage may vary !

Ernie, I have two round but N frames wearing Ahrends and their fit is as perfect as it can get with a mass-produced item.

Definitely no metal standing proud of the wood any place on them.

I am probably going to buy a set of Ahrends for my square but 29-2 and will report back on fit and appearance.

Wyatt-

I purchased mine 3-4 years ago now. He may very well have gotten things squared away. The other forum comments were specifically for square butt N-frame revolvers. If you buy some for the 29, I hope they fit the way you like !

Thanks to everyone for the nice words. Ernie you need to contact us about your grips, sounds like a mis-marked set of K frames.

We will be updating the website as soon as DHart gets us the pictures. We have Retro-Combats, Retro-Bananas and some new boot grips. Below is a set of square butt Retro-
Combat grips with the optional Tung oil finish.

Once again thank you guys for your support.
