Here's a nice 1955 .45ACP that I had the Factory cut the barrel to 4 1/2" about 40 years ago. Why 4 1/2"? No idea, but I really like it.
Keith Brown Ropers (of course!).

A 4 1/2-inch barrel was believed by Elmer Keith to be ideal for law enforcement officers so your 25-2 would fit the bill. The 1955 45 Target with a 4-inch barrel was built in 1955 by S&W for Remington and is a favorite shooter of mine :). Click on the photo for a better look.

Many years ago a local shop had a Model 25-2 that had a 5" barrel. I think they wanted $1000 for it and that was at a time you could buy an excellent shape standard model 25-2 for about $750. I didn't have the money anyway so I passed but wish that I had bought it.

I always wondered why S&W didn't offer the Model 25-2 or the earlier non-model marked .45 ACP revolvers in 4" & 5" lengths as standard production items. With those heavy barrels I'm sure they would handle beautifully.

That looks great! I have a barrel for my 25-2 at Andy Horvath's shop right now getting cut to 5". I also sent him an old used Model 29 barrel with the double pinned front sight and base and asked that he use that sight on the barrel once it's shortened. Hopefully it'll look like factory like yours.

I bought a new 6&1/2" 25-2 back in 1970. Took it to a gunsmith to have the barrel cut to 4". I was a bit surprised when I picked up to see that he had cut the barrel to 4&3/16". His explanation was that there was some concern back then about legislation about barrel length so he left it a bit over 4".

There was concern handguns with a barrel length of less than four inches would become illegal. Many S&W barrel lengths were cut to 4 1/4 inches as a result.

I would have left it with the gunsmith until he took the extra 3/16” off.

In the last couple of years Ruger added 1/4” to their 4” Bearcat just for the Canadian market.

Stupid, stupid laws……
