The member who started this thread, K-22, left out whether his friend's navy service is completed or if he will go out on another ship. I'd start by asking the friend what will be allowed where he works next, if he knows. Also, although it might spoil a surprise, ask what kind of knives he likes. For example, if you gave me any single blade knife it would see minimal use, at best. I like traditional pocket knives with a variety of blades.
The number of the law I mentioned is on the signs in every post office lobby.
I do not know what the navy allows or if it is up to the unit commander, but a federal law writes that knives with blades no longer than 2 1/2" are exempted from that law's prohibition of weapons in federal buildings. However, that law does not prevent administrative regulations banning all knives like is done in Post Offices. If he goes on to work in federal facilities it might be worth limiting the blade(s) to 2 1/2".One thing I forgot to mention.
Due to various local rules and regulations, both here and abroad, I think keeping blade length under three inches would be a good call.
Best,
Gary
