The cylinder latch on my 31-1 went floppy last week. This gun was bought recently on Gunbroker with no box or papers, and no provenance. The cylinder latch had worked properly for several range trips, but was no longer sprung when I went to clean the gun after the last trip.
Popping the sideplate off revealed a small, single-diameter pin loose in the space behind the bolt, which did not fit snugly in the sprung hole in the back of the bolt, and which I could not manage to maneuver into place to make the bolt function again. An online search quickly revealed that the pin should have been stepped, with the larger diameter fitting snugly in the hole in the bolt and the small diameter fitting down into the spring to keep everything aligned.
A call to S&W Customer Service confirmed that, and resulted in a replacement pin in the mail to me, same day, no charge, no questions asked except for a mailing address. Of course, it fit perfectly into the bolt when it arrived, the bolt slid easily back into proper position in the frame with no fiddling needed, and the gun is fully back in service.
It's a small thing, but S&W gets enough criticism on this and other forums that we need to compliment them when they come through for a customer.
