Purchased a 681-2 that came with a Hogue monogrip installed. I removed it because I wanted to replace it with service grips. However, the roll pin that goes perpendicular through the bottom of the grip frame is missing. My question is, what size roll pin do I need to purchase at hardware store? Thanks!

What was the "Stirrup" for the Hogue grip mounted on? Almost always the stirrup is mounted on the stock pin! If you drove it out to remove the stirrup just re-install the pin that you took out!

Its probably an oddball size but its closest to 1/8", Numrich cares those roll pins FYI

The original Hogue grip required removal of the factory stock pin to install the stirrup.

No, it didn't. Why someone would remove the factory pin to install the stirrup is the question! I have installed numerous Hogue grips, all that is done is the stirrup has to be spread enough to snap over the pin! Someone didn't read the instructions. Regardless, the pin is 1/8".

Some of the (older) grips did require you to remove the pin. I ordered 2 sets directly from Hogue, a rubber set that used the pin for the mount, and the hard nylon type that required me to drift out the pin. Since the nylon is the older type, it seems the pin mount is the more recent.

I have a set I bought in 1988 from Guy Hogue at a match where he set up his trailer, and he fit the grips to my 686 personally. The saddle that went over the frame bottom was not drilled out to allow the orienting pin to be there. The design was later changed.

As a matter of fact, the very first ones had a plastic clip that snapped over the bottom of the frame, after you removed the cross pin. They quite often broke, so Hogue modified the attaching piece to a stirrup which clipped onto an aluminum block. It also required the removal of the cross pin. The last, simpler, design was the stirrup that clipped over the through pin on the frame. See below.......

Here is one more transitional stirrup setup, between the two I just posted. The stirrup goes around the frame and the pin rides inside the frame. Haven't been able to find a pic of the very first style yet.

Thanks for all the replies. It always amazes me at the depth of intelligence on all things smith and wesson here. These grips appear to be the older style that required the crosspin to be punched out. I purchased the pistol this way. Thanks for all the replies!

I bought a 19-4 recently with old style Hogue grips. The roll pin had been removed. I called S&W customer service and they mailed me one for free. Good luck finding one at the hardware store. I couldn’t.
