Is it possible to take the barrel from an L frame (686 3") and have a gunsmith fit it on an N frame (627 pro). I am not very knowledgeable about gunsmithing, I realize the frames are a different size, but I don't know if this has or can be done. I remember reading about people putting Colt Python barrels on Smith frames, calling them Smolt's.

Has anyone done this? I have both guns so its not about the cost of obtaining the firearms, more of if it can be done.

Thanks
Tom

It could be done with a stupid amount of work

First the L frame has a smaller barrel shank that would need built up and then threaded to N frame size

Then you would have to adjust the extractor locking lug on the L frame barrel because the center line distance between the bore and the lug on an N is greater than and L

It would be far easier to take a N frame barrel and cut and contour it to what you want.

You'll almost always come out ahead by selling what you don't want and buying what you do. Unless you can do the work yourself and have all the tools. If in good condition, your original guns likely retain all of their value and may of even appreciated. One nice thing about owning a Smith.
