That lake effect is crazy. I live in central Ohio, and we get an average of 28" s of snow a year while Cleveland and the eastern lakefront gets over 50".

The Buffalo area can get this in one storm as shown in the forecast above.

Those deep snowfalls get the ducks moving across central Ohio

I left up-state NY & the City over 50 years ago, when I was 18, for Florida. The Navy kept me bouncing around in and out of Florida and other garden spots before I finally settled here. Up state NY can be beautiful, especially this time of year and even with the snow. I can say that now, sitting pool side, with the grandkids splashing about while the burgers are sizzling on the grill and I'm sipping a little Nob Creek and water. Yep, that snow is mighty pretty from a thousand mile south.
Friends, hope your snow blowers are all prepped and ready to go. Be safe and please don't over exert yourselves……..

While the volume looks intimidating, there are some mitigating factors.

The people who live there are used to this, and pretty well acclimated. The population base is such that real snow removal gear and staffing is present. Just saw an article: the NYS Thruway has their own gear and folks - 250 heavy trucks for a total of 570 miles. They are big and don't fool around.

I grew up just off Lake Ontario, and lake effect snow was common. I also drove OTR for quite a while, mostly Illinois to New England. I would much rather drive there than other parts of the country that are not as well prepared. Linked to the article about the Thruway was a series on the top five daily snowfalls in (upstate) NY. Each was right about 4 feet.

Even with all that, I think I missed 1 day of school in 2nd grade for snow, and one in HS for freezing rain.

We chose to live where we do.....Western NY. No better place to be. But there is more to our weather than some of you will understand. We are located just above the Lake Erie snow belt, and just below the Lake Ontario belt. As such, we live in God's Country.

Y'all are hearing about the storm today. It even was shown on Fox News. I looked out my window today and saw sunshine and blue skies.

Many of my friends moved south when we all retired at the same time. Hear about the 2 hurricanes that hit Florida this year? They heard too. I'm not sure where they are living now, but it ain't in their cozy waterfront mansions.

My son drank the cool aid and moved to TN. Last year a tornado hit their house.

I Will admit that we get bad weather too. Last Summer's storm was devastating. My pool and patio was badly damaged, and insurance will not cover it...

It makes us in Florida hope those in NY are snowed in and cannot come to Florida.

Only been there one time.
My Boss sent me up there to check on a Threat Radar simulator at the AF RBS Site located at Ft. Drum.
They took me to lunch at a neat restaurant.
It had a huge glass wall looking out on a frozen river with rocks sticking out of the ice.
'This is a really nice view when the water is flowing.'
I bet it is! I'll have to come back in warm weather!

Being a lifetime resident of WNY (born in the city of Buffalo) I can tell you that most of the projected totals are never achieved. And news outlets like to say "half a foot" because that is WAY more dramatic than 6". The lake effect snow off Lake Erie tends to stay below I90. The snow belt as it's called. Which is good because there are several ski resorts there. When Lake Erie freezes over (it does not some years) the snow machine shuts down. Our worst storms tend to happen before Christmas. The problem with Watertown and everything from Syracuse north along the I81 corridor is that Lake Ontario is too deep to freeze. They get blasted from November till April. But as much as it pains me to give NY State credit for anything. They do a fine job clearing the roads. Most of the small municipalities do as well. I live in the northern most suburb of Buffalo. Like GypsumJim we'll probably see 2" of snow at most. My biggest issue with the snow now that I'm retired is the way it impacts my Buffalo Bills passing attack……. The Bills stadium is south of the city. Smack in the middle of the snow belt. I wish they'd have built new stadium in downtown Buffalo.

Luckily just west of the Lake Erie lake effect snow, just south of Cleveland Ohio. East of us are getting hit hard with snow up to Buffalo NY. Tomorrow starts the lake effect where I live, 1-3" expected, winds shift a little. Couldn't imagine getting 2-5' of snow at my age. Started the snow blower 2 weeks ago, ready for whatever hits us. Larry.

I'm north of Buffalo.cold but green grass. Supposed to get 2" or so by Monday morning. Took the mower deck off the Kubota today and put the front loader and rear blade on. Eventually I'll get hit too. I'll be ready.

In NEPA we're too far east and south to get hit with the lake effect snow. We'll get the ocassional squall, but that's about it.

Most of the storms we get are coastal, and if they merge with ones off the plains like they did last Friday, things get interesting.

We'll see. It's early but it's shaping up to be a real winter for a change.
