Lake City Ammunition Plant

While an accidental firing from mishandling ammo is theoretically possible, obviously it is not probable. It would be cool to take a tour and see ammo being produced in such massive quantity.

In the fall of 1978, I visited the Winchester Ammo Plant in East Alton, Illinois for a job interview as a graduate mechanical engineer. During my plant tour, I saw more ammo "spilled" on the floor (during an 8 hour production shift) than I could reload in 3 days using my RockChucker. The streams of loaded cartridges and shot shells was astounding. I found out that 22 LR priming compound is completely inert when wet. Dry primer dust could be set off by brushing your hands together. The safety standards on the 22 LR line were very strict.

Most inspections were done by women using their eyes only to detect mistakes. Automated computer visual inspection was just starting in the design stage for the ammo lines. I received a great job offer, but eventually went to work in Minneapolis to be closer to family.
