Has anyone had this surgery? I'm mostly curious about how long the results last. Longer than a typical eyeglass prescription?

I had mine done about 12 years ago. It was a simple laser procedure. They did both eyes the same day. Before the Lasik I wore glasses, bifocals, before that contacts, very poor distance vision and needed a little help for up close, reading etc.. After the procedure my left eye is 20/15 the right 20/20. It takes a couple of months before your night vision gets back to normal, a lot of "Halow" effect that fades with time. I do need to wear reading glasses but was almost to that point prior to the Lasik. Procedures have gotten much more sophisticated since then. I assume the price, $2600 for me, has come down. I have not lost any of my distance vision and my reading ability has remained static over the last 12 years. For me it was a very positive experience.

I know 5 people to have it done and only 1 of those 5 failed. I personally want to get it done and the odds are pretty good. I say go for it...

I had it done in 1999, (getting ready for Y2K). Seriously though, I tell people it was the best thing I'd ever done for myself. A side note, I have worn glasses since the third grade and contacts for 20 years before the surgery. Prior to the eye map, you have to (or did) go without your contacts for 2 weeks. At that time I didn't even have a pair of glasses, so the Dr. had me pick out a pair of frames and made me some for the 2 weeks. I picked out a nice, thin, sexy pair of black wire frames and off they go. When they came back, I was appalled! The lenses were 1/2" thick!!!!!. When I put them on everything on the peripheray was convex. They were HORRIBLE!

I stayed in the house for 2 weeks!

I had it done ten years ago, and I need a touch up because I'm now well on the dark side of 50, hurtling towards three score. If I had had it done when younger, it would have lasted longer because your eyes age faster like everything else after the mid-point. Ask me about my knees. Or back. Or elbow. Ah, forget it.

I had worn glasses forever; it was liberating to not have to, worth every penny spent, to me.

I had prk surgery feb. of 08. It's great. I wore glasses for about 20 years.I also had both eyes done at the same time. both eyes are 20/20 now and I love being able to pick out new sunglasses when I want to. Although being over 40 , I need reading glasses or I can usually hold the paper arms distance and am able to read the writing. my bill was $3200. Best $3200 I ever spent. The place I had mine done at had no interest for 24 months.I wished I would have gotten it done along time ago. Good luck on your decision .

I had it done in one eye, and for me the procedure didn't work. My eye was 20/45 going in, 20/45 coming out. It did something, since my old glasses didn't work anymore, but it didn't fix anything.

The results aren't guaranteed, and I knew that going in, so I'm not complaining. All I was out was the money, but some people have had real problems that only a transplant could cure.

My dad just had this surgery last week, second operation is next week. He's worn bi-focals and tri-focals for about 30 years. This is more expensive than Lasik, but he says it's more effective?

From his e-mail: "The Crystalens surgery on my right eye went off without a hitch. No discomfort at all.
Experienced "double vision" for most of the day yesterday, and it felt like I had something inside my lower eye lid. No foreign object there, and vision is much improved today.
I go back Friday to have a follow-up, but doubt there will be any problems. The other eye should be done in a couple weeks."

That sounds like cataract surgery, Lasik is a refractive surgery.

Lasik should last for years, depending on how old you are now. When we get to our 40's, we all develope a near point problem (presbyopia ), while lasik corrects our distance vision. If you are in your 20's-30's, and no Rx changes for 2 years, you should be good to go until mid 40's. Then you will need reading correction of some type. If you are at the point of already needing readers, as well as distance, there are some options also, (mono-vision). Hope this helps!

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Thought about it for years - had vision of 20/850 in one eye and 20/900 in the other. Got old trying to make up my mind and got cataracts. Had the cataract surgery several years ago and now have 20/40 vision in both eyes. Its great since I had worn rather thick glasses for about 66 years. Hope the Lasik works for you.

Thanks for all the input, it's really appreciated. Starting to sound good.
