Either a 7 shot 686 or 8 shot 627. Id want the most shots I could get out of a revolver.

To me it would be a tossup between the 627PC 5", or the 625 4". Both work with moon-clips. I like both the 45ACP and the 357 Magnum round as manstoppers, but think that I might tilt toward the 627 because of the option of shooting 38 Specials for small game.

A model 581 with a 640 BUG, with as much .357 and .38 ammo that I could carry or load my dogs with.

"Last Ditch" to me conjures images of a guy down, not out...back to the wall and fighting his last. I wouldn't want ANY revolver in that situation.
My SIG 229 in .357 SIG with several mags immediately comes to mind.
For a SURVIVAL situation I'd probably grab one of my 4" 66's or a 67.

Depends on what we mean by "last ditch".
My 642s are my daily carry last ditch guns, there to back-up my Glock 17 or 19 in case of a failure, my gun gets shot during the fight, a disarm, I need to arm another person, etc.
For a TEOTWAWKI scenario? My 681 or Security Six. A 4" .357mag is a nice thing to own and very useful. We also don't have bears around here, or my answer would change.

I'll go with my 627 Pro. That is one fine revolver. I'm a 686 fan since 1980 and I have three of them. Evan a three inch CS, but man, I really like that 627!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In my original post I was assumining "Last Ditch" to mean a hideout revolver.
If I was picking a bigger revolver for my primary fighting hand gun it would be a Mod 25 or 625 in 45 ACP.
Plenty of power for self defense and with full moon clips a very quick fumble free reload.

I'll take a 4" 686+ over the auto, thank you. With the belt set up to carry 18 loaders(two Uncle Mikes large rifle full box carriers each hold 8 on the off side and a 2 pack on the gun side and you've still got room for an M14 double pouch but things do get to the point you wonder about suspenders!

For a "last-ditch revolver" or "SHTF wheel gun" or "survival gun" or whatever you choose to call it, I would agree with the handful of votes for a Smith and Wesson revolver with the following features:
1- .357 magnum (got to love that it can take .38 special)
2- Fixed front & rear sights
3- a 3" or 4" barrel
4- stainless construction (blued steel is beautiful but SS is great for ease of maintenance)
5- Pre-lock, (just 1 less thing to worry about)
6- a 7 shot or "plus" cylinder would be...well, a plus.
So...basically my vote is for a pre 2001 S&W 681. A 581, 586 or 686 would work too.
Just my 2 cents...for an auto choice...a Glock 23.

I said in an early post here I would keep a 5 inch Model 27-2 357 Mag but if by last ditch we are talking an end of days senario I would also keep my Sig P228 9mm with (6) 15 round magazines because 9mm ammo is much smaller and lighter to carry then 45 acp or 40 S&W.
However if one really thinks about it a Model 18 22lr with 4 inch barrel and a couple of bricks of ammo gives you a lot of hunting and protection and 1100 rounds is do able weight wise for carrying and moving.
I'd probably leave home with Ruger Ranch rifle in 223, Sig P228 9mm, and the Model 18 and 22 ammo in a pack for when I ran out of ammo for the two primary weapons. It's a nasty senario and my thoughts might change at the time of it happening because of the situation you have around you then and how far you think you have to go to be in a safe place.
Having served in the army in Vietnam and after spending 10.5 months humping the Central Highlands I can tell you that you are definitely limited in the weight you can carry if on foot and the necessities are water, some food and what you need to protect yourself from danger and the enviroment. You will also need a sturdy utility knife like a Kabar.

"LAST DITCH" My 649 because it's stainless so it won't look like heck after extended carry like the alloy ones do. It's 357 mag so I can find ammo in 357 OR 38 Special. It's steel, but J-frame so light enough to ALWAYS have with me ANY season, but heavy enough to deal with 357 rounds. Double or single action for potting man or beasts, but no pointy hammer to hang up in the pocket. It's a nice backup to the Winchester model 92 in 357 Mag I roam with and uses the same ammo. It's a revolver and not huge, so I can use it when I am old, crotchety and arthritic because there are no slides, mags and half a dozen buttons to push with old fingers, or high recoil of my 45s or 44 mags.

S&W Model 38 for a hide out revolver. TEOTWAWKI would be my S&W 610 (shoots 40 S&W or 10mm auto via moon clips).
