I despised him when he first broke into the sport and I guess that was mainly because he was always at odds with the all time best and my favorite, Dale Sr. Since then, I believe he has come a long way at improving his image and his definite abilities. With that said, its sad to know he will be leaving as a full time participant after the 2015 season.

I don't like JG.

But I'm truly sad that Mark Martin retired from active racing last year...

Ninety something wins, four championships, never missed a race, I want to say ninety something poles. The winningest driver in the modern era of NASCAR.

Yea, I think he'll be missed. You might not miss him, but a lot of others will.

I was never a Gordon fan, but I'm honest enough to admit that he is one of, if not the best I ever saw, and I've been watching this sport since Curtis Turner was around. I've seen a lot of drivers come an go. That "kid" in the 24 car is tough.

IMO, as a long time NASCAR fan; He's one of the the best ever and is a class act. He has also set up a foundation to aid children with handicaps and just donated one of his cars to charity at the Barrett Jackson auction.
The reason he was so disliked? He was winning a lot and wasn't a "Good Ole Boy" and didn't try to act like one. NASCAR has changed a lot in the last 20 years and mostly for the better. What used to frankly be a Southern Redneck sport now has a national audience and some degree of respectability.

We made a big deal of going to Richard Petty's last race and it turned out to be Jeff Gordon's first. As has been mentioned, he has a great deal of talent and ability. I never quite understood why he was so disliked other than he was young, good looking and one heck of a driver. He always treated his fans well and was very polite.

Amen. Sometimes the reason for dislike of something is just because we don't like change. True, Jeff was sort of at the pivot point of good ol' boy kick the tires and take off racing and the modern super technical version of the sport. And he was good! I saw him do stuff in a sprint car and midget car that made my hair stand on end. It's tough to watch our heroes grow older and the new breed gradually replace them. I loved the Alabama Gang and all the rest, and really saw what Gordon brought to the game. I've watched NASCAR from the late fifties to now, and see my heroes being replaced by the young lions of stock cars. Time goes on. Without a doubt Jeff is one of the greats, along with so many others I miss. As I see them come and go, it just makes me feel privileged to have witnessed so much of it, and a whole lot older. :)

Is he on the New England Patriots? I don't follow football that much.

Glad the whiny little brat is leaving!

So he wins 92 races & 4 championships. When he wins more than 200 races & more than 7 championships like the "King", then everyone will have something to talk about.

And NAPCAR has gone down the crapper since Dale Sr. was killed.

He will be missed but not by me.
I've got nothing against him, just not a fan.
I was always drawn more to Petty, the Labontes and other old schoolers.
Been watching NASCAR since Coo Coo Marlin and guys like that were driving cars with metal bumpers.

meaneyedcatz, I started watching the old guys in 1965 when I was 11. Always Petty or if he went out & he had another driver it was him. Loved Petty Blue!!!!!!! The first car I had was a 1966 Plymouth Satellite that I painted Petty Blue. Looked just like his racecar except for the decals, daddy wouldn't let me have those put on. I remember Coo Coo also. It's a shame we lost Adam, he was another Richard.:(

I for one would like to see NASCAR go back to it's roots in one area. That would be to scrap the fake stock cars now in use and go back to racing what the manufacturer produced. This of course would still incorporate the safety features that have made this a better venue.
Then winning in a Ford or Chevy would actually mean something!

YOU AINT NEVER LIED!

LIKE HIM OR NOT, HE IS A VERY TALENTED DRIVER WHO HAS HAD A GREAT CAREER. HE DID A LOT TO UPLIFT THE IMAGE OF THE SPORT FROM ITS GOOD OL BOYS DAYS. IT APPEALS TO A MUCH WIDER AUDIENCE, AS A RESULT OF THE CLEAN CUT YOUNG TALENT LIKE JEFF WAS. THROUGH THE YEARS, THE RAINBOW WARRIOR WAS ALWAYS IN THE CHASE. HE WILL BE MISSED……..

The problem with going back to cars that the manufacturers produce in NASCAR is that the manufacturers don't produce a car that's good enough to modify the way factory showroom cars were done years ago. True, they ARE way more crashworthy today, but that's in street trim. Go buy a new Fusion or Camry from the dealer and try to spend enough on it to make it suitable for that style competition, and you will find yourself deeper in debt than the Federal government. I used to love the fact that most of the cars all the way up through the Eighties had factory floor pans and so forth in them, but the unibody junk that's safe for today's transportation needs just won't cut it on the 33 degree banking at 199.

Never really like Mr. Gordon but what turned me off to him most was his fan base. I like to talk about the sport or a race in general, but with them, it was Gordon this or Gordon that. Gordon, Gordon Gordon, it never ended.
The funny thing is now it's Earnhardt Jr. fans doing the same thing.
With all that said, NASCAR is still the only sport in town, everything else is just a game.
