Last Time Shooting S&W Auto

41, 52, and 6906 in the last month. I should probably stop shooting the 52 so much until I can get a 52-2 to use, but I probably won't.
If you have some concerns about you old style extractor, my vote is don't worry about it. If you are always charging from the magazine, you are unlikely to see any extractor failure.

Weather permitting, I go shooting every Sunday afternoon. From mid-March until current time. My rotation has included a PC9, PC 945-1, PC 1911, DK 1911, Shorty 45, Recon 45, 457, 4013, CS9, CS40, 5903, and 5905. All are a joy to shoot and typically there is at least 3 in the range bag at every session. Plus a few S&W revolvers.

My buddies and myself , all Cape Canaveral retirees , go every Tuesday . Sometimes one of us will have a Dr appt or something and we'll go on Thursday . It's an outdoor range , but the stations are covered . I always have my 41 , 945 , one of my 845's , one of my PC40's , DK 38Super and whatever else tickles my fancy .

First time I have ever seen a nickel plated Smith 41. Tlawler I really like the looks of your 41. As my old boss used to say "now that pops" which was always a good thing.

I do always charge from a magazine. Thank you for the info, that eases my worries.

To expand on the thought and to further lower your concern…

After buying my first 52, which was a 52-2, I started a multi-year deep dive chasing down every avenue looking fore MORE Model 52's and seeing & learning a lot along the way.

What I found countless times were 52's and 52-1's, many from estate sales, and many of them were offered in packages with one or two extra old style long extractors.

And in chasing down old correspondence in gun magazines and short articles, it seems that the basic story was that the no-dash 39 pistols certainly experienced premature extractor failure. I cannot say exactly why this happened but it is a fair bet that rough, poor and improper handling had a part in it.

When S&W elected to redesign the extractor on the 39 (and for the debut of the 59), it simply made good sense to do the same for the models 52 and 52-1.

And many owners, fans, competitors and general lovers of the 52 and 52-1 immediately called up S&W and asked to purchase a backup extractor or two for their old style 52 pistol.

…and it is exactly these extractors that we find included when these estate sales are offered. Extra parts that they hoped they would not need — and never did need.

Could the old style 52 or 52-1 extractor fail? Absolutely. It's a machined part made by humans. But prevalent? I would say it is not at all prevalent.

The 52-1 that I own was my fourth 52 and my first one with the old style extractor. It also has the best trigger of all of mine and honestly, it may have the finest trigger of any of my guns and I own many with truly elite triggers.

It's difficult for me to say which is my favorite 52, but I do believe my 52-1 is the one I enjoy best on range day.

Monday. I took my Equalizer to the range to test fire it to make sure I put it back together properly. I brought my 3953TSW, but spent too much time sighting in my AR so wasn't able to shoot it.

Before that was June when I took one of my 457s to the range because I like shooting my 457s. :)

I like my 457 and think it's a very underrated piece, being one of those "budget" guns.

The last S&W semi-auto I let out of its cage was my M&P 2.0 9mm back on Memorial Day. I usually spend more time shooting revolvers than bottom feeders.

Subjective of course... but to my eyes, Smith & Wesson simply never made a better looking semiautomatic pistol in the entire history of the company than the Performance Center 3566 Limited. And your photo is stunning!

I've shot my 5903 a LOT lately, had some trouble getting the sights right. I didn't know if it was me or the gun. Last time out I shot my Shield after neglecting SD practice with it for too, long. I'm glad I did. I wasn't happy with the results,
