I posted about this revolver several years back. I learned that the later engravings were contracted out by Smith to over sea vendors. I suspect this is the case with this one. I remember when he bought it. It was from a well known sporting goods store, now long out of business. It was an advertisement in the local paper that he noticed. Large firearm sale and this single revolver was listed as a highlighted sales item. I went the morning of the sale as they first opened and watched as he put it on lay away. He turns 90 in a few months, but fell 3 months ago and broke his hip. We have spoke about this Smith many times over the years. I think he still has the advertisement he cut out of the paper and his sales receipt. I know for a fact he has not fired it. It came in a brown cardboard shipping box, with its display case and tools, but it sat in an unmarked blue box with the wax paper and brochures. I see him several times a week. Today he mentioned he may want to sell the revolver. He had it tucked under his dresser. He asked me to reach it out, just to look at it. It had been some time since I saw it. It has presentation stocks. I took a few pictures of it lying on his bed as he sat in his wheelchair close by. He was a Winchester man and I was surprised when he bought this. Sometimes a gun speaks to you and this one did to him. I know he is not in a financial crisis and he has family that takes after him with similar interests. I told him to keep enjoying it and not be in a hurry. I will check sold auction listings and other sources for value estimates. He took it to Cabelas 2 years ago for an appraisal. They told him it is worth $1700 but would give him $1100. Thankfully he did not sell it to them. When he told me about it I strongly told him its value was closer to $ 1700 x2 ... I think a late 29-2 unfired in presentation case would be worth $1700. The engraving may double that, though contracted out by Smith. Any of your insight as to value or other information would be interesting to me and I will pass it on to the owner. I hope he keeps it a bit longer, but if he does sale i hope to help him and may even plunk down some cash myself.

I would agree with your assessment of value at $3000 to $4000 for a contract engraved Model 29-2, especially if it has the original presentation case. I also hope your friend continues to enjoy it as long as he wants.

It would be a shame, IMO, not to pass this piece on to family. Something to remember grandpa/great-grandpa by. I have 4 grandsons who are "into" firearms and my son knows what to do with the collection when he's finished taking care of it. (I've already given them a few each to get them started.)

I too agree that at auction it would go for $3K-$4K for an Italian contract Factory engraved 4" 29-2. Perhaps even higher if there were a couple of parties that needed it.

Fun gun!!
