Are there any depts or LEOs that still carry a revolver as their MAIN duty gun?

We authorize S&W and Ruger in .38 Spcl., .357 Magnum., . 41 Magnum, .44 Spcl., .44 Magnum and .45 Colt. I know a few that carry the .44 Magnum, but the revolver for us is mainly found in the form of a back-up .38 Spcl. 5-shot S&W. The annual qualification is set up for longer strings of fire in short time periods so keeping up with a revolver is more challenging that the average LEO is willing to deal with. Those that carry a revolver do so out of purpose and practice accordingly.

About a year ago I saw one of our senior Ft Lauderdale patrolman carrying a well worn Model 66 with some pretty beat up wood grips.

When I asked him if anyone else carried a wheelgun he said one female Detective did and maybe one other but that was it.

I remember seeing the 659's and 645's come and go .
Now I am seeing alot of H&K 45 and Glock.

My former agency has always been a S&W client and currently issues duty weapons. Current mandate is the excellent M&P in .40. But...there is serious consideration going on now to allowing the UC folks, Narcotics and Detective Divisions, to go back to revolvers due to the fact that they don't say "cop gun" like the current semi's do. Will depend on the assignment, qualification, dept approval, etc., but to me it's funny how the times have changed. Used to be exactly the opposite.

Yes. And while I don't carry them exclusively I do carry one of them regularly......:)

I carry a S&W 627 Pro Series daily. I was issued a Glock in the academy but then I began doing some PPC shooting and fell in love with revolvers. After some begging and pleading I was allowed to carry a revolver. We stopped issuing revolver in 1993, but we still have 20 or do officers that carry revolvers they were issued. All Of them were 4 inch S&W 65's. On another note our honor guard along with several others in OK issue and carry revolvers. We carry the old 12 round loop loaders on the belt. They look much better and we use them for the 21 gun salute at funerals. It's easier to collect the spent casings to give to the family.

Well, it's not my primary, but I do qualify with my 686+ yearly and my 66-1 snub. I rarely carry the 66, only when it matches the clothing of the day. I wear the 686 when I occassionaly work desk duty. Matter of fact, the 686 is going to the range tomorrow afternoon. Up to a couple of years ago, we still issued .357 ammo, Speer GDHP 158gr.

That is one ugly and underpowered .357 S&W for carry. I'll trade you a SIG 228 with 8 mags for it plus a little cash:).

Nice rig! I love it and you are very well armed. BTW there's not a single LEO in my local area who packs a wheelgun on duty. Have a few buds who do carry J frames and a few snub 19's and 66's off duty.

WC145,
I like that holster you have in the photo. If you don't mind me asking what brand holster is it? I would like to get one for my 627

I had that made by Black Hills Leather,it is this model - Black Hills Leather - Only the best custom gun leather western cowboy police holsters rigs. Call them and speak to Rudy, he's the owner, beware though, he's very busy, talks very fast, and you want to make sure that you're very clear on what you want. Follow your discussion with an email reiterating everything to lessen the chance of errors with your order. They do great work, I had him make me the same holster and a mag pouch for a 1911 to go with the belt and cuff case he'd already made me. Everything matched perfectly and looks and fits terrific. I don't know what the wait time is now.

The organization I operate with still allows revolvers and I carry a S&W 19 4". Hardest part for wheelgun folks is getting a level 2 retention holster (mandatory). I got mine at Gould & Goldrich for the 19, and also for a 6" S&W #28 from Tex Shoemaker. Also still carry a S&W 36 off duty.
