Let's talk Derringers

So, how many of you guys stick your derringers in your garter belt?
I find garter belt carry to slow to access. I find the bra a more natural place to carry. I do practice drills where I fan my face with my offhand while saying “well, I do declare” and pulling my derringer with my strong hand. I’ve gotten pretty quick at poker table range double taps. The fan works as a distraction from the draw process.

The derringer had its day, about 145y ago. They are small but not very shootable & 2rds, a good 4" folding fighter is probably more effective & easier to carry. Inaccurate & almost impossible to deploy one handed. Today we have subcompact 9 & uhg, 380, the derringer is something to put on display in a gun cabinet, not carry to defend your life imo.

I believe the NAA Mini revolvers have largely rendered derringers obsolete.

Still, I would someday like to have one of the High Standard derringers in .22 Magnum.

A buddy of mine who was a deputy in Larimer county, Colorado tells of a gas station hold up he worked where after the crook got the till and the coin changer, the Attendant said, "I suppose you want what's in my wallet too."

He said it effectively ended that criminal career on the spot.

So he carried it cocked? Yep some people win the lottery too.

Good to know.

No need to, like the Glock, S&W Model 40, the Centennial, or even an Iver Johnson Safety Hammerless, the High Standard Derringer is DOUBLE ACTION only and has NO EXPOSED hammer to fall on.

Maybe, aside from the fact that some years ago the ATF decided that carrying one in its wallet holster makes it an AOW under the NFA, the kinda cutaway trigger guard is like a Fitz special and is only panty twisting feature it has. In the earlier post the derringer pictured with holster open. Here it is snapped closed.

Paco Kelly carried a High Standard in .22 Mag while working undercover and has written about several incidents where the little 2-shooter came into play.

The Bond .410 derringer packs ten 000 pellets. It's is like a mag dump from Glock 26. Not something I want to get hit by!!

Just picked up a second model(1880-1888) Remington stack barrel Derringer and as soon as those .41 rim fire +P+ hollow points get here I am going to start carrying it.

Seriously, anyone have an extra set of grips to fit one?

I’ll sell you mine , with the extra gun attached. :)

I’d say originals would be tough to find, but I bet someone makes reproductions.

A Remington .41 is currently at the top of my “what I’m looking for” list.

Good enough for Buster Scruggs, good enough for me.

So not listening to my own advice, I picked this up today used from a local pawn shop ($300 OTD). With bird shot, this might serve a purpose for snakes on the trail. Or with buck, you get 4 pellets per pull and increase your odds of hitting something. The quality of this American Derringer, far outshines the Cobra above. And the trigger is much better. I'll go shoot it tomorrow or Monday.

Now I AM GETTING TEMPTED to find me a good derringer...watching 'The Last Sunset' w Kirk Douglas has not helped the situation.

What's your opinion of Derringers?

First off, congrats on your new purchase. Second, just a few of my opinions...and please let me stress, these are just my opinions.

Many of your cheaper derringers usually have a steel barrel insert put into a gun made of cheaper metal. Bond and American Derringers are solid. Both are well made.

The American Derringer is more historically correct, in my opinion. The Bond, however, is exceptionally well made and is built like the proverbial brick shipyard.

Now, in terms of practicality and accuracy, a derringer is definitely not what I would call a "go to" gun. They're a novelty gun. Period. A good quality J-frame is more accurate and carries more bullets.

Again, that's just my opinion.:)

I'd be concerned about a shot load from a short barrel. Seems I heard about a bad guy shooting someone with a sawed-off shotgun. However, the pellets didn't do much harm because the barrel was so short, they weren't able to gain momentum.

Someone needs to bring out a true small frame pocket derringer in .380 or 9mm. Model it after the original Remingtons and offer in full stainless.

Like someone said the Bonds are enormous and HEAVY for what they bring to the table. As heavy as an all steel J-frame but you only get two shots and a bunch of other disadvantages.

I have a Bond Arms derringer chambered in 45acp. When I want to carry concealed I can slip this into a pocket and nobody knows. Other wise I have to use a shoulder holster, not so easy to hide in the summer time. What people fail to remember is these little guns are not made for shooting past 10 feet or fast reloads. They are a close in belly shot last defense weapon. I'm confined to a wheelchair so my carry options are limited, a derringer can hide almost anywhere. I would never try anything smaller than a .38 for self defense.
