Let's talk Mountain Guns

I had until recently an original 7 shot .357 Mtn Gun and traded it away to a LGS for a 696. I loved my Mtn gun and didn't really want to sell it but wanted something else more. I was also thinking at the time that I would prefer to have a 625-6 Mtn gun and have it converted by TK to shoot 45 ACP as well. I consider the 4" 624 and 24 to be in the same catagory.

What is your favorite Mtn gun and why?

My favorite of the bunch is my model 657-4 41 Magnum mountain gun. It took me a while to warm up to the mountain gun concept, but since acquiring this one, I have come to change my mind on them. I have always liked the 41 magnum, and have had several, and I think this caliber works very well in a revolver the size of the mountain gun. I'm sure they're all nice, but this one is my favorite. wyatte

I was going to read through the few replies and move on until I read the above from the OP. You just had to ask so…

My favorite "Mountain Gun" is the one S&W never built. A blue steel MG in 45 ACP. Since they never produced one I had one built and it is by far my favorite S&W. So much so, on my most recent trip to the range (last Friday) it was the only gun I took. 150 rounds later it's still my favorite.

I've posted these pictures so many times I suspect some of you are tired of it. If so you have my apologies ahead of time. (smile)





My often seen (and shot) M25-2 with a shortened Model 1950 tapered barrel, round butt, action and trigger tuned, fine bead blast and then blued. S&W factory RB "Combat" stocks, bought used and abused, refinished by me.

As for me, I have a 686+ Mountain Gun that just seems to be perfect. I also have my 625 Mountain Gun in 45lc, which probably get's more use out in the woods. I think it's the bigger bullet theory.

For long term trekking in the mountains I guess my 2.5" M 686+ would be my first choice, although I'd be hard pressed to ignore my M 27 Classic. One round less but so doggone easy to shoot.

My first choice was a 3" M 629 that now resides with a friend but I don't miss it; I'll carry full house .357 Magnums in either of the above mentioned guns and feel comfie in the high woods.

My favorite mountain gun is actually a "non-mountain gun". It is the .45ACP Springfield commemorative with forged hammer and trigger. I just wish it had been made as a regular run !

A big +1 on what GLL said. Mine is my favorite non-mountain Mountain Gun. It is my bed room gun. I also have a weakness for Blued Steel Mountain guns.

I also hungered for a blue steel Mountain Gun at one time. This 25-13 is the result. I apologize for PC hole in the side, but that's the only kind they had then.

I love to talk Mtn Guns! As you might guess from the photo below (which I've showed here before), I like them all! But if I had to choose just one, I guess I'd agree with those who chose the 625-7 in .45 Colt, though its a tough choice. The 629 and 657 are a little snappy for me to shoot very much with full house loads, the 686+ is a close 2nd, but I have other .357s I like as well or better. The 625-6 in .45 ACP is my favorite revolver in that caliber but 45 acp isn't my favorite revolver caliber...so that leaves the 45Colt (pictured to the far left). All are wearing Ahrends retro Round to Square combats in various woods.

Mine is my 625MG in 45LC, I had it cut for moon clips and now can shoot 45 Colt and ACP rounds. It is not for sale!

I have 4 ......357/44mag/45acp/45LC. Never warmed up to the 41 cal. So didn't get that one. My favorite is the .44 mag.. It had rode many a mile on my hip over hill & dale. The lazer etching long gone as its gone to from my 357. Lazer etching was a cheap shoddy job by S&W.

Also the so called lazer engraving by Smith looks it was done by kid with a "sharpie". Wouldn't have it on anything I own.

Same here. It's not my favorite S&W, but it's my only Mountain Gun.

Mine's a 57-5 that needs to be shot a little more to loosen up the trigger.

My favorite MG was with me on many outdoor adventures while stationed in Alaska.

It is a 629-5 in 44 Magnum and has produced a flinch in more than a few of my friends who have shot it.

It now is my "on the fridge gun" sporting Speer Gold Dot 44 Special rounds while waiting for duty. It will also get out into the woods several times a year during deer season. In the woods it will carry some of my 44 Magnum handloads.

Gotta love the N frames...
