Common misconception. We don not live in a democracy. In a democracy the country is ruled by the majority. If we were a true democracy, we would have no congress. The senate and the house of representatives are a mine democracy, in that it takes a two thirds majority vote to pass any bill.
In a republic the people use the democratic voting process to vote for a person to represent them. This person can vote however they want. For example… when we vote for president, we aren't really voting for president. We are voting for how we want our elected officials to vote.
We have more of a representative democracy… which is a kind of republic. Look at a current issue like the bailout of these big ol' companies. The majority of Americans didn't want the bailout to go through. But it did. Why? We don't live in a democracy.. Instead it's a representative democracy.. Also knows as a democratic republic.
