Little known facts about Arizona...

I'm a bit late to the party because I had to dredge through a bunch of family photos first. Although I've never lived in Arizona, I do have a family history there. One of my great, great, great uncles moved to Arizona right after the Civil War and became a successful miner in the Preskitt/Prescutt/Preskett (anything but Prescott!) area. When he died in 1904, he left his share in one of his mines, the Silver Cord, to my great-grandmother Mary. She, in turn, promptly divorced my great-grandfather and took off from Iowa for the Arizona Territory with my 10 year-old grandmother in tow, to run the mine. They made a grand tour of it, stopping at Pike's Peak and the Grand Canyon along the way. They settled in Presc*tt (supply your own vowel), and Mary and her partners began to work the mine, which had not had much development. It must have been difficult for a single mother to be a mine owner in that time and place, but she persevered for five years. Her position was eased somewhat due to the fact that one of her partners was the Sheriff of Yavapai County. Unfortunately, during her time there the mine produced very little income. She ran out of money and had to sell her share. She and my grandmother moved to Chicago around 1911, and never returned.

Below are a couple of photos of them. The first shows them going on the trail ride down the Grand Canyon. My grandmother is second from the right, and Mary is fourth from the right. Notice how bundled up they are in their Victorian outfits -- just the thing for August in the Grand Canyon! The second photo, taken a few years later, shows my grandmother and a friend in Presc*tt. Note the humble retail establishment behind them. Yes, it belonged to those Goldwaters.

BTW, the Silver Cord mine is currently for sale. It can be yours for fifty thousand cash, or ten thousand per year rental. You'd better get there before Tony Beets or Parker Schnabel! Check it out here: Silver Cord Mine Group for Sale
