Loading for 25-2

Veteran reloader. Been loading .45 for over 30 years. Can load rounds capable of shooting 1.5 inches at 25 yards in my 1911s. Just got a 25-2 after grieving for 25 years for selling the last one. The new child shows great promise at the range. One of those guns that seems to shoot several loads well.

Never tried loading .45 auto rim. Read where some guys are getting stellar results loading auto rim cases vs .45 in moon clips.

Please share you thoughts and experience loading auto rim cases vs. .45 in moon clips.

I have been told several times that the Auto Rim cases tend to shoot slightly better than the ACP cases. The 25-2's I have had experience with over the years, prefered heavier loads with soft cast bullets, possibly because of the often oversized cylinder throats.

I had a 1911 & got a 325 last year & reload for both. I had some metal moonclips (3 & 6) & a bunch of the nylon/plastic full moonclips. I also bought some S-L AR cases to "play" with. I can't say whether I've noticed any difference accuracy wise (short bbl.) but the S-L AR cases are plenty strong, though I don't think you need them for that. Moonclips are handy to have loaded & ready but kinda annoying to load/unload. I prefer the AR cases for regular use. I can't think of a good reason, off the top of my head, why one would be more accurate than the other. Maybe the ARs would give more consistent headspacing, but on a revolver, with long & loose throats, I don't know it would matter?

I only shoot 45 ar's in my 25-2 as I don't like messing with the moon clips. I mostly shoot the 235 gr. Keith bullet cast from linotype over 4 grs. of Bullseye with excellent accuracy. In fact, all cast bullets I shoot in the 45ar work well with 4 grs. of Bullseye. I have seen some polymer full moon clips I might try though.

In my 25-2 I shoot a lyman 45266 sized to .4525 with 3.6 grains of Bullseye. This is the most accurate load I have ever fired out of any revolver. I only shoot to 25 yards so I am not sure how well it would perform farther than this. I have not used AR cases as I use this load in my Kimber autos as well.

I shoot and get the same results from the 230 grain 45 hard ball rounds that I load for my 45 semi auto's in my 25-2. I get very accurate results similiar to what I get with my 2 custom 1911 Government 45's with 5 inch barrel out of my 6.5 inch 25-2.

I have been shooting 45 acp revolvers for decades, and have shot half, full moon and auto rim, and I have never seen any difference in them, with the right bullet/load my 25's will shoot big bullets into nice tiny clusters as long as I can hold that tight. I personally prefer full moon clips.

I only used AR cases in 45 revolvers that had chambers that wouldn't extract properly due to chamber corrosion and improper cleaning damage. My current 1917 and 625 shoot just fine on full moon clips. Ivan

I'm shooting 200 gr lead swc over Bullseye and Clays with auto rim cases most of the time in my 25-2s. I don't see much difference in accuracy, but I dislike fiddling with the moon clips.
