Looking for information on these fellows. Looked around a bit years ago and found nothing so hoping someone here has a bit of information. Posting here because they apparently preferred this gun. Thanks

300 yards !!

I had trouble hitting a steel Pig at 100 yards with a 6" barrel on my first
try at the range, with iron sights !!

Good round, but.......

I have THE BOOK-----The Long Shooters--and The Origin of 300 Yards Revolver Shooting (by Wm. Brent Altsheler--Published by Outdoor Life Publishing Co.---in 1912)---and sold for 75 cents----a little over a penny per page---with a damn sight more than "a bit of information".

It shall be on loan to you starting shortly after you tell me where to send it----and you don't even need to have a library card.

Actually, you don't have to tell me where to send it---assuming you're listed in the current SWCA Roster.

A former cigar smoking shooter found under a 20 gallon Stetson hat in Idaho would say 300 yards was too close.

----------and he would be smack-dab on the money!!

Of course he stacked the odds in his favor, and used guns with bigger holes in them than did the Long Shooters----and packed his cartridges lip brimming full of volatile substances----the more volatile the better!!

It was very likely he who coined the phrase "Some's good, more's better, and too much is just right!"

There's a lengthy article on these guys in an older Gun Digest. If you have access to an article index of this publication you can purchase a used copy of the year it was published on eBay fairly cheaply.

Or you can pay my $150.00 per hour research fee for me to go through my highly unorganized piles of shooting literature. :)

If you GOOGLE, Captain A.H. Hardy you will find a plethora of information. From a brief scan, he was a pilot, a long range sharpshooter and possibly had some connection to leather holsters. There were too many listings to copy and paste here. Sounds like quite a character.

Enjoy..............

Let us know what you find out.

wow ! lots of help right off the bat. Thanks to all for the tips on where to look and to rct for the offer of the book, and yes sir my address in in the roster.
Its the ad that caught my eye as I had not seen it before, and the M&P Target is my favorite prewar Smith. Always admired the early Colt full page ads and wished S&W had done the same.

Keith, there are plenty of S&W ads out there. Not sure if there were many full page but I have a bunch in my paper collection. I would have to go back and look. I know that I have many smaller ads.

I get a sense that Horace and D.B. were very thrifty never wanting to waste anything or perhaps purchase a full page when a half or quarter page would suffice.
