Is there a difference between the long and short action hammers? How might I identify a long action hammer by just lookng at it? I have a 1932, 38/44 outdoorsman and it has an aftermarket hammer, maybe King. I would like to replace it with an origonal type hammer, so I need to know what one looks like. Or at least how to indentify one. TIA

Rgds,

If the spur is attached at the top, then it's a long action. If it's in the middle, it's a short action. The change happened shortly after WW2. You can easily search Gunbroker for new and old Smiths to see the difference. N's and K's look identical in the gun. Also, the knurling is much finer on long action spurs.

Begs the question, what might be the difference be between the N & K , long throw. What I really need to do is identify a long throw, N frame hammer. I there a difference, N to K? Will any long throw work in both a K or N?
