Longer barrel thread!

That's interesting. I did not realize any of those were made. That was about the time when I shot a little IHMSA but I was definitely far "out of the (equipment) loop" at that time and couldn't really justify spending money on special IHMSA-oriented guns, so I tried not to pay too much attention. Always interesting to see what shows up here. Thanks for showing us that one. :)

Just how long is that barrel? 8 3/4-inch, or something else? It looks longer.

The barrel length is 10 5/8". The model(on the bottom 3) is 29-3 Silhouette. The unique thing about these guns is the 4 position adjustable front sight which was designed for this model.

I thought 2 were made and 1 was cut, IIRC and the Catalog is correct. Both subject to occassional error, one much more frequently than the other.

That's what I remember reading. The supply has grown! I'd give stupid money for one, but would then shoot it 'til it fell apart. Or at least try, as IHMSA is still my favorite "gun game"!

I did give "stupid money" for the gun! However I did get a lot of paper with the gun to prove it's provenance! This is one of the papers!

Thanks for sharing the letter! Most informative. Happy to note that Mr. Calvert did test it's capabilities. Was it drilled for the scope mount or did he use some sort of "no gunsmithing" mount when the 4x scope was installed?

One of my rather more mundane 29-3 silhouette models that gets regular workouts.:

Big throats made for lots of experimentation to get good results. The Model 57 has never suffered from such dimensional shenanigans.

Given the title of this thread I hope this is not a hi-jack. Just wanted to report that I had an excellent trip to the range yesterday shooting my new 629 hunter with 8 3/8 barrel. I think I am getting used to it because this is the first time shooting it that I got the kind of results I expected from such a long barrel. On the 25 yard range I was all in the black shooting rightie, DA 2 handed standing hold. I wasn't far off the black shooting 2 handed leftie, and one handed leftie and rightie. I was shooting Magtech 44 special cowboy loads. Boy is that stuff dirty. It slipped my mind to shoot some full 44 mag yesterday. A while back I found a good deal on some S&B SP 44 mag. Next time I'll try some on the 50 and 100 yard range.

I had so much fun with it I was trying to find a stainless 357 8 inch barrel S&W. I didn't turn anything up on gunbroker last night. Did S&W ever make such a gun?

Score! !

Hey jaymore
I like your score! ! ! I always wanted to try IHMSA, thats still one of my roundtoits! The gun in the middle of the three gun pic is my hunter with a red dot on top and a see thru mount. It looks a lot worse than your gun! Deer blood is a GOOD blueing remover! I get the skeptical look when I tell people I shoot it at 200yds. The 41 mag was not drilled and tapped. He used a clamp on mount! The gun is not 99% as it was used and was intended to be used in matches. However, it is one of 3 left!

Sir, be careful changing loads! ! Find a load the gun likes and stick with that load. When you stretch the yardage changing the load will drive you NUTS and you will never get the full capabilities of the gun! This is why most long range shooters reload! You will need to find an L frame 686 to find a 357 SS 8 3/8" gun.

jcelect that is a beauty! Something rather intriguing about the 41 mag chambering also. You have a very nice collection of l o o o n g barrel revolvers, very sweet!

Does anyone know if there is any other model 357 mag Stainless Steel with an 8 inch barrel besides the 686?
A full underlug on such a long barrel sounds heavy.

I love the long barrel Smith revolvers. Thanks for sharing yours.

I have an 8" nickel, pinned 44 mag and enjoy just looking at it.

Bought a 460 XVR with a 14" barrel and "Performance Center" stamped on the side of it. Probably the ultimate "Long Barrel".

Shot it once, then sent it back because the empty shells had to be pounded out of the revolver (Federal Ammo). Three weeks later, got it back, but had to immediately send it back again because it wouldn't unlock. Thought that maybe I just didn't know what I was doing, so took it to the gun shop where I bought it. They tried and said some thing was definitely wrong, so sent it back again.

So much for the Performance of the "Performance Center"! I wonder if I could charge them rent, since they've had it more than I have?? Sure would like to look at it and shoot it! Oh well, I've got pictures of it.

I have 2 686 long barreled (8-3/8) guns, a silhouette and a regular red ramped front site. The full length lug is a little front heavy but they are great to shoot and come back on target very quickly due to the lower muzzle jump. Probably not much heavier that the 10" 41 mag you have.

If you find one, don't pass it up as they no longer make the 686 in a barrel longer than 6".
