Look what S&W 500 magnum 700 gr did to me.

D10- Were those your loads or "factory"?? If they were your loads what was the recipe? The 700gr from ballistic supply produces a major fireball out of a 4". The recoil from the 700gr/4" is not bad, you need to try that same round in a 8 3/8 SW or better yet a 7.5 BFR, it will give you a better understanding of the term " free Recoil". The 700 is also not very accurate past 20-25 yrds out of a 4", it's accuracy truly does shine out of the longer barrels. Be Safe,

I don't think my old bones could handle it. If I was younger I'd have the longest barrel with wheels on it. I don't think we'll see anything bigger than a 500 s&w. Unless it's an auto?

Can Clint Eastwood squeeze out one last dirty Harry movie with a 500 s&w in 44mag so he can safely shoot it? Bill

I don't need it, .44mag is plenty enough. I figure I won't have to stop a charging rhino anytime soon. Besides, who can afford to shoot a .500mag? The ammo for it is almost as expensive as .22lr ammunition.

You won't see anything bigger because anything (non-smooth barreled) over .50 caliber would be a destructive device.

According to your post you bought a gun just to sample the recoil?? After seeing what it is like are you keeping it?

Back in the day, there were Model 29s to be found in the pre-owned case in various gun shops, often with the original box of ammo, minus 4 or 5 rounds. :)

I am not sure I have seen the same thing with used Model 500s. I am not sure what that says about us as shooters, but I am sure it says something!

Yes they were my own loads and It was scientific experiment for me. This is not something you'd use for shooting at the range or hunting. Therefore I would not recommend using my recipe, bullet was seated out to create more space for powder. But I'll give you safe load for 700 magnum which I also used, it is 24 to 25 grains of H110/W296 with light or heavy crimp. As far as accuracy, I shot it at 50 yards with 4" model and it was fine.

Somehow, I seem to be able to resist the urge to shoot something that kills on one end and cripples on the other.

Especially when not certain which is which.....

The 500 really is a versatile cartridge and can be gentle or punishing on the sending and receiving end depending on what you feed it. I have fired max loads with the Sierra JSP and its not "fun" to shoot and one box of 50 is a workout.

The beauty of heavy cast bullets is they can be driven at normal non-magnum velocities and avoid leading issues and still have freight train power and penetration. I have a custom 600 grain mold and it gives me the ability to make my own slugs that are cost affordable and I can load them up or down. 600 or 700 grains of anything coming out the end over 1000 FPS is a handful.

Loaded up heavy its a gun unlike any other for "launching" projectiles.

Absolutely agree with S&W 500 Magnum being very versatile and on top of that it almost costs me same as shooting .22 cal. I reload (do not cast) my own bullets and 50 rounds come out to $15 to $22 depending on the load.
