Looking at a 627 Pro and wanting a reality check ("price check")

Been looking for a revolver for a while... it will be my first firearm purchase. I admit to being something of a newbie at this. So I've two questions.

I've been offered a 627 Pro for $640. It's seen only 50 rounds and the inside of a safe more than anything else. Is this a good price on this model? I think so, for a 3 month old gun.

Second, I've looked long and hard most of the summer for a revolver. Seen some good deals go by that I wish I had jumped on. This looks like one to me.

At the same time my newness to purchasing gives me pause. The seller has a perfectly fine track record. Maybe it's just my concern that I can't see and hold it to "know" that it's for real!

I'd appreciate any feedback. Jump on it, ask for more specifics, or what?

I don't think that's a bad price for an 8 shot .357 Magnum that can serve as both a competition gun and concealed carry piece at the same time. The Pro should have a 4" barrel and it should be cut for moonclips. I would ask the owner if anybody has been playing around with the innards. That in and of itself is not bad, since these revolvers can all use a bit of work as they come from the factory, but you will want to know if somebody has been using it as a dedicated game gun with springs so light that they fire only certain primers. If you know that it's completely stock and it's what you want, I'd take it. I paid a few dollars more for a lightly used 627-5, but I did not want a flat sided barrel. And I had to pay to have my -5 cut for moonclips.

Noticing the previous post, I must add that if you want an 8 shot pre-MIM/pre-lock Model 627 you can expect to pay a great deal more. The Pro is not available in this configuration and never has been. I am no fan of MIM parts and frame mounted firing pins but I must admit that my 627-5 has so far been quite satisfactory.

Can I ask, what is MIM (and why is not well-liked); and why would a "frame mounted firing" pin be less desirable? Aha... I found out an excellent guide to S&W here: http://www.cactustactical.com/reloading/sw-inspection-guide.doc

Obviously, there is more I need to learn.

I had been favoring a 686 but this 627 caught my eye and seemed to be available for the same (or slightly better) price than I had been encountering. I know I'd like an S&W .357, 4" or possibly 6"... I have some wrist problems so the heavier gun's lesser recoil is appealing, as well as 38 special, but I don't wish to go to a lower caliber.

Am I in the right ballpark for my firearm choice? I'd like to keep it below $600ish if I can... and would prefer S&W first, or perhaps a Ruger GP100 only if I can't find the right S&W. As I see it, it's either a more pricey but refined 627/686 or a lower-budget GP100....

I've got a 627-5 V-mag that rapidly became my favorite competition revolver. Wonderful platform regardless of lock/MIM.

That model is rare in my area at any price.

I just bought a new one for $729. That was the best price that I found after scanning many sites for a couple of months. Used ones don't seem to show up often or if they do the seller doesn't have photos, won't respond to questions etc.

I would have been happy to buy a used one at your price if in the condition you describe!

That is a excellant price on a excellant gun, they are hard to find and it appears S&W is not producing them right now. I doubt there could be anything wrong with a three month old gun, as long as he has the original box and paperwork I'd jump on it. S&W will still warranty it as a new gun if you have everything. If you are not going to jump on it please send me the purchase info.

This being a first-time purchase for me, how do we go about it? Is it like eBay, where buyer sends the $$ ahead and then the seller sends the package? Is it based on trust, or does the FFL sort of act like the middleman and ensure both parties are on the level?

As I said, this is new to me. Thank you...

Having just purchased a couple of guns on Gunbroker, I'll give you some input on that. I check the seller's ratings, and if they're almost 100% positive I will do business with them. These purchases require you to send the $ first and have some trust. (That's why the rating check.) If the dealer has many (several hundred to over 1000) sales and only a couple of negative ratings, I still usually don't mind doing business with them. I chaulk the few negatives to the fact that some people are just never happy . Also you'll require an FFL dealer to receive the gun for you, if it's an out of state seller.
As for the 627 Pro: They are great revolvers! I've owned one since they first came out and still love it. Shoots great, carries great, good factory triigger, and holds 8 rounds with moon clip reload capability built in. What's not to love. They're only slightly bigger than the L Frames, but carry about the same. Just my thoughts on this. Oh yeah....The price seems fair if it's as described.

I'd say a pretty good price. I've shot L frames for 25 plus years but I bought a 627 Pro a year and a half back. It bacame my favorite right off. I luv those moon clips and 8 rounds.

The new ones I see run about $900.

I'd snatch that gun for $640 so fast you would get trampled.

MIM is a bogeyman. It's worst sin is the MIM hammers and triggers are ugly as a babboon's backside. Reliability and function are fine.

I really don't expect to hear from you! Here's a picture of my 627 Pro along with a 686 Pro and a 627 PC. I polished the cylinder and slabside to match the PC and added the fiber optic fronts to them.

Speaking of that, what's the proper order for care? Do you clean, then oil, then polish... or clean, polish, then oil?

Though I've read threads about care of stainless revolvers I have never seen mention of this.

I am afraid you've got me, too... I'm not likely to be parting with this one!
