Howdy, After work I'm stopping to look at a M52-2 that is for sale. I've heard and read(here) great things about these guns, but is there anything specific I should be looking for/at in a '74'ish vintage gun? It is supposed to be excellent w/box, tools & 3 mags.
Your input is appreciated.

Regards,

Check for overall smoothness of the slide/frame...these were hand lapped from birth to finished product for a real smooth fit. Even if you have felt a little looseness it may still shoot well. Look at the bbl rifling, it should be pronounced with no ripples (indicating possible heavy loads being shot) Check the ball end of the bbl for contact with honed bushing all around or close to it. The accuracy mainly depends on 3 points of contact....bbl bushing fit, lockup in battery, and slidestop facing to bottom of bbl on the bbl lug (area that the slidestop contacts bbl behind where the recoil guides locks in). Other factors like head spacing of chamber, hood clearance in slide, overall tightness also have a great effect on accuracy. Your talking about a 148gr full wadcutter that gets released at about 750 to 800 fps depending on load. The weapon was guaranteed accuracy of 1.5 inches at 25yrds in a Ransom rest at the factory up to the time they were discontinued in the 90's

Well....? Did you buy it?? Hope to see pics soon! I have two and love them both.

Yep, here's a pic. They do not do it justice - it is beautiful! Hopefully more to follow and a range report after I get it (has to be shipped). Thanks for the info..........

This is one of my always wanted guns. I have only seen one and it was not for sale(private sales).

deanodog,
Don't give up, just keep your eyes peeled and be ready to buy.

Bob

The one I had was a very accurate pistol. While I don't have the pistol anymore I do have a weight like the one Robby B has on his pistol. My apologies if this is not the right place for this, but was is the current value of the weight?

wc872,
If it's an original S&W weight, it's quite valuable. DO NOT sell it without verifying value first. The reproductions are inexpensive. I think I paid $20.00 for mine.

Sorry, I do not recall what they weigh.

Bob

I feel the weights value should be up near the model 41's counter weight, since we see fewer of them, yet I have never been able to sell any of the 5 I own. I have asked $150.00 and been turned down. There is a guy making the 2 piece copy for $75.00. Most of the one's I own, I purchased with the guns. I will not shoot without the weight, they make a big difference.

Congrats to the new owner. I bought mine in about 80' dark blue box, to shoot centerfire portion of 2700 Bullseye matches. I have less than 500 rds thru mine, box, tools, etc. Should I decide to sell it, what's it worth?
Thanks guys.
