Looking for a 45.

I'm in need of a non 1911 45.

I like the CS45, and the 4566, but don't know much about them. I do love the decock feature.

Looked at the XD and M&P too.

Found a tough as nails Ruger P90 in excellent shape, but for the size it only holds 8+1.

Didn't Smith make a 45 about the same size as the 6906?

You may be thinking about the 4513TSW, early version without the rail. It is a 6+1 compact 45. A little bigger than the CS45 and about the size of a 6906.

I carried one on the job and still do in retirement. Great carry 45. CS45 is nice too....once you put TercGen grips on it. Regards 18DAI

Offhand, I recall the Model 457. I had one for awhile. Great little gun. It might have been similar in size to a 6906. I can't recall and I didn't look up the specifications.

But if you really want a .45 the CS-45 is perfect. Tough little gun, a little stout in the recoil department but manageable. I scored 248 out of 250 with mine years ago on the Texas CHL test.

Being a person who doesn't like the 3rd Gen. chopped-down models, I'd recommend the S&W 645.

The S&W 4586 is one tank of a gun. Several Law enforcement agencies used it once upon a time.

I once saw a Walther PPK fire a round using the DeCocker when the drum safety failed. Always point in a safe direction and be aware that a falling hammer may detonate a round.

It appears that you are looking at all different size 45s.

In the full size catagory The USP along with the SIG P220 & P227 are superb choices. I actually prefer them over the various Smith & Wesson counterparts.

In the mid-size catagory the USPc 45 and HK5c both have almost identical grip size since they are designed around the same magazine. These are incredibly durble sidearms and will take years and years of shooting even the hottest cartridges out there to get them to want to retire

My example above happens to be a USP45ct for suppressor use, but it is available with a standard barrel as well. In his size category you might consider a Shorty 45 from the Performance Center

While I do not currently own a CS45, I do own several CS40s. My CS40s have been converted to use the 10MM Auto cartridge .

I understand you are not looking for a 10MM auto pistol, but the CS10/CS40 pistols are similar in size to a CS45. I have pocket carried the CS10s on several occasions. They are light enough, weighing in at about the same weight as a 357 Magnum Model 640.

In the compact category, I am a HUGE fan of the Boberg XR45-S

Because of the bullpup design, this tiny pistol still has a 3 3/4" barrel

It is a DAO design, but with one of the lightest DAO triggers I have ever tried. It has a external hammer (I now it looks like a striker fired pistol) so it is capable of double strike. The hammer is large and square and flat, certainly not what we are all used to seeing a hammer look like

My favorite .45 is my 4506 that I replaced the slide with one from a 4516. It gives me the full-sized lower end (that takes both the standard 8-round mags and the extended 10-round mags from the 4506) that is perfect for my hand size, while having the shorter upper end with the 3.5" barrel. Essentially it is exactly the same as the 4596 that was sourced for and distributed by Lew Horton.

I just won a 457 on the big site complete with all the stuff from the factory for 345 shipped. If it's anything like my 908, it'll be a keeper for sure!

Many years ago when I worked for Sports Authority and they actually sold pistols, I sold a S&W 457 to a regular customer at a fair price. I had discounted the pistol because it was part of S&Ws Economic offerings. The gentlemen regaled me with stories of it's reliability for years (until I joined the military and left town). My point being is to check out the 457 it's a good gun that dosen't always pop up on the radar.

The SIG 220 is also nice, I've owned one since 2008. It's been reliable with a variety of FMJ ammo using SIG factory mags. I didn't carry it, so I didn't try it with JHPs, but I believe it will feed fine. The only modification I made was changing to G10 grips. It's a boringly reliable pistol. Writing this makes me want to shoot it.

I've also watched an older HK MK23 used as a range gun, it also functioned flawlessly, it was a crowd favorite. After years of range use it showed no wear and hadn't had armorer maintenance, or recoil spring replacement in years.

Put a threaded 5.3" StormLake barrel on it. It's a big gun, not sure if I like it...

You don't just run out and pick up a 3rd gen 45 these days, unless money's no object. Might wanna look into an "Officers" size 45acp, they're a little easier to find and can be had for a decent price.

The CS45 is a great carry gun, far more accurate than a gun that size should be. Very underrated during its production life. The 4506 is my favorite full size 45 ACP. Both are well built for long, dependable service. You might look at a S&W Model 457 as they have been easier to find at least here.

Sigs replaced my 1911 back in the late 80s as carry .45s....... either the full size 220 or compact 245 /220 compact (that can use full size 8rd mags with the X-grip)

the 245 is about the size of a 6906 .......but a single stack 6+1


The Sig 227 is a double stack .45..... I've no experience.

I like the S&W 4566 Commander size and all steel.

The 457, 4513TSW's, and 4516's are all nice compact, single-stack 45's with 3.75" barrels, and would be good for CC. Out of the three, I'd recommend starting with a 457 and replacing the plastic sights with Trijicon night sights. They will all be 7+1 capacity.

The 4566 is an awesome pistol, as is the 4506, and these larger pistols will also be single-stack 8+1. The CS45 is the smallest S&W 3rd Gen in 45ACP, with a 6+1 capacity and a 3.25" barrel. Great for CC, but comes standard with some very fat Hogue rubber grips that some people don't like (myself included).

If you're looking for high capacity, I'd probably look at the HK models, which have a great reputation.
