Looking for a Wood-Stocked .22 lr Bolt actioned rifle

My Ruger 77/22 shot patterns with everything I tried.
I've never owned a good bolt action .22, though I'd like to.

The CZ is a fine rifle that is only lacking in two minor areas, the stock trigger is horrid. The pull easily fixable with a $5 spring kit and there is no over travel stop, but there are ways to fix that cheaply too. The other issue I had with it was the cheesy stamped metal trigger guard, milled trigger guards are also available.

While you are looking look at some older Kimbers, they are just about the prettiest .22s you will ever see. They are accurate with some of the finest factory triggers out there.

I'd go for a Ruger M7722. They are great and very good tack drivers. I have 2 that I would not trade for any other .22 made. Hard to beat for the price and what you get.

If you are not partial to single shots then I recommend a Remington 33, or the 34 which is the version with a tube mag. This gun has killed more squirrels and small game then every other gun I have owned (although my Deerslayer is coming up fast). I like this gun so much I have owned it twice and it has an incredible trigger. Not to mention it has the nicest wood I have ever seen on a stock .22, and every other Model 33 has similar wood but mine had a little better grain. I have not taken some pics after I redid the wood with four coats of Tru-oil but just imagine better than these pics.

The Weatherby/Anshutz bolt action 22 is a fine sporter if you can find one. I love mine, and with Eley Target EPS (Blue box) I get 50 yard groups 1/2 inch or smaller regularly. I don't know what the N.Y. Kimbers are selling for now-days but my brother enjoys very good performance from his. My 82C Kimber of Oregon, Varmint will do 1/4 inch at 50 yards, the less expensive EPS ammos, but I think they run more than your limit of $1000. I started with a Leopuld 2x7 RF Special (30mm), but as my eyes got older went to a 4.5x14 AO 40mm. The big objective lens helps with twilight varmints.

Your requirements for out of the box less than $ 1000, go with the CZ, genuine Turkish walnut and will shoot as good as anything in the class. Want the same super accurate gun in a less finished gun? Find a norinko JW 8 or a JW 15, Same gun as the CZ which was the Bruno years ago. You will be amazed at the accuracy. I have an 8 and a 15, and they shoot as good as some of the $ 800 to $ 1200 guns. A few years ago these were $100 to $200 guns. A new stock and polished blue an they look just like the old CZ Bruno's.

I've had an Anchutz, a Win 52, a Husqvarna 22LR, a Weatherby 22 Auto and several other nice ones. All were very accurate. When young I had a Mossburg target rifle that would give one hole all day long at 25 yards. Dad was carrying it on a sling over his shoulder, his horse decided to buck and dropped Dad on top of the rifle. Broke the stock and my 12 year old heart, after that you couldn't hit a watermelon in a closet.

I bought a Marlin 25 at a gun show, bloody hands had held the gun by the BBL and the stock finish on the fine birch stock was gone. I draw filed the BBL, cold blued it with some high dollar stuff and refinished the stock. I was getting ready to glass bed an action for a fellow. I prepped the Marlin and for grins glass bedded it. It is a 25 yard one hole gun with some 25 year old PMC ammo I found buried in an ammo box and had pulled it out to shoot. I decided to keep the rest of that brick for the Marlin. Finding a nice Marlin 25 or 82 would leave most of that $1000.00 in CD's.

Thanks a lot for the sincere and well thought out replies. I've always liked the Kimbers and older Remingtons... I've always wanted a Weatherby (maybe a Lazermark Mark V .270 Wby someday...) and like the idea of having the smaller version in the meantime.

There's a 1947 Winchester target .22 in a gun store for $450... but it is a bit ungainly. The Rugers above look good, but to my eye, the Kimber is really nice.

The CZs are evidently out of stock now....

Please keep the comments, advice and pictures coming.

Thanks,

Back in 1994, I bought a new Ruger 77/22 and topped it with a Leupold 3-9x33 Extended Focus Range with Adjustable Objective scope. I can't count the rounds my sons and I put through that rifle over the last 19 years. It's always been accurate with just about any ammo, and totally reliable, plus it's ergonomically perfect for me, and the ten round magazine is very convenient.

There are some really good .22s out there, many of them very expensive. I think the 77/22 is a great buy...accurate, reliable, and reasonably priced.

I think Anchutz is the epitome of .22 rifles and would like to have one but at the moment I want S&W revolvers more....I have a Remington 541-T HB and a Ruger 77/22 (1988 vintage) that both are nice rifles. The 541 is a full size rifle and the 77/22 a bit smaller. Can't go wrong with either one or a CZ for that matter. I would recommend spending some $$ for a nice scope.

We have 2 Kimber 84's in 7MM-08, for a 5.5 pound rifle they are very well made, accurate and beautiful. I bought one for my wife and had to get me one.

I used to want a Ruger 77/22 but have waited until they are almost as expensive as a Kimber.

I have lusted after the Kimber 22. Someday I will have one. I know I would prefer it over my "custom" Marlin 25.

I had a 270 WBY it shot like a Lazer. I traded it off after I inherited my Dad's old Model 70 WIN in 270. If you buy the 270 Win loads, that are 200 FPS faster, you in essence have a gun that performs at the WBY level.

i have a cz 453 heqvy bbl. couldnt sk for more out of the box accuracy. mine has the single set trigger that works great.btw, the later weatherby 22 autos were made in japan, the earlier ones were italian. it will say on the bbl. where it was made. mags will interchange.
