CI=Cocking indicator. Quality took noticeable a downturn (Personal opinion) at about A-500,000 range after the cocking indicator was dropped and other things dropped from production to reduce costs.

Oh...okay. Thanks. What exactly was the cocking indicator? Was that a little pin on the back of the bolt/slide?

kas9412 - the pin indicates the hammer is cocked - COCKING INDICATOR - NOT a loaded chamber indicator. The pin is located in the back of the frame and is actuated by being cammed by the hammer rotation. This feature dropped aound A-465,000. These were sometimes removed as some feel it affected trigger pull???????

Thanks Tom, for your clarification. I have a 90's era 41, but I am looking for a 70's era or earlier pistol with the cocking indicator (and/or a 7 3/8" barrel) - So I guess I am not as well informed as I thought!

So, in your opinion, does the CI affect the trigger pull?

kas

I have an early model with the 7 3/8 compensator barrel and I wouldn't sell it for $900.

I saw two at a gun show last weekend. They both had 7" barrels. One had a beat up grip and the guy wanted $1100 for it. The other was about 98% and that guy wanted $800. Neither had the CI. These guys were right across from each other.

The $800 one really called to me, maybe the guy would take $750.... It was in beautiful condition, if it had the CI I would have grabbed it.

I never have good luck at gun shows. The ones in my area are all about new production handguns/long guns and military weapons, but I see almost zero nice older S&W pistols and revolvers. None the less, The Nation's Gun Show is at Dulles Expo Center this weekend and I plan to go. There is one out of town vendor there that frequently shows up with the types of guns I want, but he usually has a very small selection...wish me luck! Probably just end up wasting the $12 admission charge...

I know how you feel kas...... I was looking for grips for my 41, hoping to maybe find a 3913 or 5906, looking for IWB holsters, and I just struck out across the board. One guy had a .50 cal with a lightweight stock. I'd prefer a 30lb stock on one of those monsters..... :D

Re: Does CI affect trigger pull? If so, so little that I doubt it could be measured. BUT old time Bullseye shooters wanted every advantage and this was one "Possible" factor. I prefer to have them installed and so, I keep a few of them on hand. A few shooters deactivated their safetys also, but most ranges and matches did not favor such modifications.

Thanks guys.

Besides the CI, though, is there much else separating the fit/finish/quality of the different generations of the gun? Personally, I would never even give the CI a second thought. Decades worth of Ruger MKII shooting has never made me want for any indicators.

Others have posted that they feel when S&W took away the CI to save costs they also cut corners a bit in other areas. The early models with the CI are more sought out I think.

I have never shot a non-CI model so I'm no expert though!!!

Okay, thanks. Not having either, I couldn't say that isn't the case. God is in the details, after all...

I HAVE A GUNS AND PRICE BOOK THAT IS 3 INCHES THICK AND IT HAS ALL S&W MODELS GOING WAY BACK. IT DOES NOT SHOW 41 BUT SHOWS 40 AND 42 MODEL. IF THEY DID MAKE IT THE MODEL 40S WERE PRODUCED IN 1952. BEST I CAN DO.
