My sister & BIL bought a place down South Car. by Charleston. A place called John's Island. Prices are high in their area; their place has gone up in value by around $80K, but it's a nice area. (I would've moved inland more, away from HOAs.) Too humid in the summer, but these past couple years with Mother Nature going through the "change" they've been fortunate.
I'm in the same boat as you as far as recently retired and wanting to move but I'm staying in PA, just out of Pittsburgh. The county (Butler) is in our sights because of the way things are. Just one story house is necessary. So. Car. is a heck of a nice place, but I don't like the heat South of the Mason-Dixon Line; plus critters too small to shoot that can kill you & wrap you in a web. And reptiles. Good luck looking for Paradise! (Look beside your dashboard light).
"If you stick with the "T" of Pa. [excludes Filthydelpha and the Burgh] you've got Alabama attitude without the summer humidity!"
Exactly why Butler Co. is a preferred destination for us! Plus, we still have people here.

What is the "T "?

Am of opinion being retired is being in paradise, no matter where ya are. While not a person of means, am grateful for not having over extended myself. And the older ya get, it seems to be harder to make new friends.
Being round people i know has importance for me. However, everyone's situation is different.

Still dreaming of moving to WV for warmer clime, political climate and affordable housing.

We chose Prescott, AZ. Strong second amendment with gunshops everywhere, 9 months of great weather with 3 months of warm and dry weather. No tornados or earthquakes, and beautiful topography. Strong right leaning politics without extremism. Housing is expensive due to California immigration. Take a look.

Most books and magazine articles about finding the perfect retirement location could be summed up as "a small town in the south". In other words: Mayberry. There are many southern towns that are a good fit for me, but the best place for most of us is near our family and friends. Wherever that may be. Best wishes for you and your decision.
