Looking to buy a carry pistol.

Try the Remora holster for carry with gym shorts. It is about the only holster I have tried that does well without a belt.
Never done it with a Shield. But my LCR in my Remora is surprisingly secure. Never used it to run. But I've ridden bikes with it and had no issue. I would think it would work with the shield too.

I have many different pistols. But I find that I carry the Shield most of the time in .40. I also have .40c that I actually shot better than the Shield as I have larger hands, but I love carrying the Shield as it conceals easier. One other note when you were talking caliper, that the Shield .40 and the .40c is the fact I have 9mm barrels for both so you get 2 calipers in one sort of speak. I also have BG380 for when on those hot summer days where my dress in less.

I would prefer something that doesn't require a belt because sometimes I wear gym shorts.

We are talking about self-defense. That requires certain considerations that you must acknowledge prior to making this decision, lest you make a bad decision. One such consideration is the realization that you just might have to make modifications to your wardrobe in order to carry a pistol that really is "up to the task."

Good luck in your decisions.

Between the two for carry.....

I don't carry but if I did I'd sure prefer the Shield. The 9c is bigger and heavier than I thought it would be and the Shield feels like something I could use This is a personal preference but it feels like part of my hand.:)

I would concur with the jframe crowd. I'll be carrying the 638 bodyguard when my permit arrives. Might also pocket carry the kel tec p32 as a backup/mugger gun.

Read Ed Lovettes book on the snubby makes a lot of sense.

Used to own the PF 9 before the single stacks became big but prefer the snubby for it's tactical superiority in up close and personal encounters. The single stack nines just haven't evolved yet imho. I.e. the shield has a fine motor safety for a gross motor situation etc

Gym shorts are not designed to hang a pistol on. What I do is to get a comfortable web belt to hang my holster on IWB, then pull the gym shorts up over the belt or you can tuck the gym shorts under your holster and of course cover it with that Hawaiian shirt your wife hates.
The belt supports the weight and you still have to comfort and style of gym shorts.
There is a holster company called N 8 Squared (N82) https://www.n82tactical.com/holster-options that make a great holster. The most comfortable holster I have found and I should know, I have a trash bag full of holsters. I bought the basic one for my LC-9 but my G-19 will fit in it and my LCP. (Just no at the same time..)
Good luck with you pistol purchase.
