This seems to happen sometimes on my no dash 29. The cylinder release screw gets a little loose, which can cause result in not being able to pull the trigger or hammer when the cylinder is locked into place. You have to push the cylinder back out, then back in again, and usually it will work (of course, tightening the screw fixes it altogether).

I haven't noticed it on any of my other Smiths. Are these screws prone to loosening on certain models (i.e. Magnums)?

Please clarify what you mean by "cylinder release screws".
Are you talking about the screws for the side plate or the screw for the thumb latch that you push forward so the cylinder can be opened?

I always snug them up after I clean them. I don't use locktite unless I have too.
You could add a drop of blue or purple locktite if you hate reaching for a screw driver....

Even the screw on a 22 cal 617 can loosen over time. Take out the screw, degrease it then paint the threads with nail polish, let dry, reassemble. You're in business.

The thumb latch, thanks.
