I realize that most of us on this site will eventually go to different guns that Smith & Wesson builds. I own 5 pistols 3 of them are Smith & Wesson's one is a Glock and a Kel-TecPF9 which I am willing to trade or sale!

I will be buying my next M&P45 as soon as next week it is a VTAC for $549.00 at the local gun store where I go frequently and know everyone there.

I also shoot there at least twice a week. I have owned shot and looked at many weapons since 1982 when I bought a Smith and Wesson Model 59 which I still have one which I shoot occasionally, but the M&P line is now my favorite weapon it feels and shoots great no matter which one you own...why own anything else?

Only problem here is I have run out of signature space below, might have to make different things!

I have settled on the M&P's (9, 40, 40c, and 45 4 inch) as my favorites, with the S&W SDs (9, 40) right behind. I have owned a lot of different handguns over the years and have traded many of them away to be able to experience and enjoy different guns (I have kept my S&W Mdl 65, however, since the 1970's), but the M&Ps are keepers.

I mod'ed the M&Ps with the Apex kit (except the 40c) and grind the beavertail off the full-size models, as a matter of convenience and preference. I also have installed Warren Tactical sights on most of them. I prefer the no-thumb-safety, no-magazine-safety models.

My M&Ps will have a place here as long as I last. They feel great in my hand, are 100% reliable, handle a variety of ammo (including my reloads) and shoot well. They are easy for me to manipulate (including racking the slide) with my aging, arthritic hands. And they were made in the USA.

So I echo Houdini1953's paean for the M&P. Great guns for a reasonable price.

I have been looking at them for sometime now. I was looking a the 1911 too. When I found I could get the Apex trigger I was sold. I sold one of my carbines today to my wife's Dad. After payday I will own the M&P .45 FS, 4.5". I thought they made it in a 5" but was mistaken with the 9mm. I hope the gun performs as well as i've heard.
When I was at the GS/range today there was guy looking at Glocks. The salesman almost had his money and I single handed, talked him out of the Glock 21 and into the M&P 45. He was much happier with the better gun and asked the salesman why he did not tell him about all the problems Glock has had and why he did not tell him they cannot handle cast bullets, the kind he makes and uses on all his other guns. I should have got the comission. Oh well.
Tell me something Rover, That trigger kit from Apex, I only saw one on the web that has the new trigger, sear, etc. Does that fit on all the M&P's or is there a special on for each cal.? Also is it easy to install at home or should I take it to a Gunsmith? I have some smithing ability.

Rover,
I considered grinding off that beavertail, but I was told by S&W it's hollow.
Are yours?

Question: Tell me something Rover, That trigger kit from Apex, I only saw one on the web that has the new trigger, sear, etc. Does that fit on all the M&P's or is there a special on for each cal.?

Answer: One version fits the M&P 9 and 40, and there is a different version for the M&P 45. You can Google "Apex Tactical" for the details; you can buy them directly from Apex or from suppliers like Midway and Brownell's. All you need to install it is a 1/8 inch punch (from Lowe's, Home Deport, ACE Hardware, etc.) and some patience. I installed mine, and I'm at the 50%ile in mechanical ability. Or you can use a gunsmith. [Full Disclosure: I have no interest in Apex or the other companies mentioned].

Question: I considered grinding off that beavertail, but I was told by S&W it's hollow. Are yours?

Answer: Mine were not. But I left a little beavertail on there (see attached), about 1/8 inch, more than, for example, the 9c and 40c have (see photo of a standard M&P9c and my modified M&P9 full-size).

I might have been close to the hollow inner space when I stopped; I know I had to work around one small airbubble on one of them. If I hit a large hollow space, it would be a case of mixing remnants of what I ground off with epoxy -- functional, but ugly -- to fill the hole. So, I cannot recommend grinding them off, although I like them gone, because I just cannot guarantee that you won't hit a hollow space! (And the frame is the gun, in terms of the serial number, so getting a replacement would be painful and expensive).

I've heard a lot of great things about the M&P's, but I'm still waiting on a 10mm version.

Glock sells a boatload of 29's and 20's every year. Smith needs to take a giant bite out of that pie.

isn't a .40 and a 10mm the same thing? not to sound foolish, i just don't feel like looking it up at the momment.

I thought the VTAC's only came in 9 and 40. We're did you find it in 45?

Thanks, Rover.
I find the beavertail useless, oogly & protrusive, but I think I won't risk the grinding. :)

Wow I just confirmed again why I love my M&P's so much as I went to the range with all three of them the 9mm the 40 compact and the full size 45.

I have only about 200 rounds through the 45 and shoot it quite well especially for a gun that was made on January 19, 2012, I went though 50 rounds left after shooting 50 last night in the 45 and 50 in the 40.

My accuracy is getting much better with my newer guns and I am dead on with the 9. Getting much faster with the 40 but with the 45 since the recoil is sort of a push and not a snap like the 40 I can shoot it rather fast, and they all feel great in my hands.

Owning several guns that you can depend on like the M&P's is my idea of a really great gun and the M&P is in fact just that!

I totally agree. I've had my M&P .40 for about two and half years with no mechanical issues at all after 2500+ rds through it. Its also my primary carry weapon. I'm not a fan of the beavertail, but its tolerable and surprisingly doesn't doesn't catch on your shirt when you draw

M&P .45VTAC??

Houdini can you answer Matt's question? Do you know of a .45 VTAC?? I have the 9mm VTAC and its my favorite 9. IF they are making the VTAC in .45 then that would be sweet.

Did you get forward set sear and trigger kit? Or the hard sear and the ultimate striker block? Thanks in advance.

All reports I get are that Viking tactics has only worked on the 9mm and the .40
as well with the VTAC scheme, there is no word yet about the 45!:(

At first when they came out I didnt like them but what a difference the Apex makes. The egros are good especially with the grips.
