I have a friend, yeah I know that's hard to believe. But anyway, she's old now, a widow, and can't cope with the cold and snow of these sometimes brutal winters here in the northeast. She has a nice home, but can't care for it's maintenance without help from friends, most of whom are a bit long in the tooth, if you get my point.

So I thought I'd try to ask some of my fellow elders where they landed at the downhill stroll, also helpful for me as I approach that fork in the road, food for thought, though I'm not ready to lay down for the dirt nap.

Florida is a candidate, south Georgia another, her few remaining folk are on the east coast, so the west coast is not an option. Someone said West Virginia might be a good spot. Tell me what you think, I appreciate it for my friend.

Cheers;

I'm interested also. Tennessee has been the most suggested place to me. In my case, whatever the state, it can't have a state income tax.

Thanks.

Florida has no state income tax. Property and 7% sales tax, that's it.
Don't know why someone would suggest West Virginia, it's colder than a mother-in-law's kiss in the winter. Tennessee isn't much warmer.
Cost of living is lower if you stay away from the oceans and Mousetown.

Yea if you want to get away from the cold WV wont help. She probably would want to be in a senior community, they take care of the maintenance and have lot of programs for elderly people.

She will want to stay on the East so that narrows it down to Tennessee can still hit cold spells, so that leaves Mississippi and Florida. Florida is loaded with old people.

Here is another one to check out

Roanoke consistently rates high for retirement, low cost, health care.

#2 would be SW North Carolina.

#3, well we never looked at any where else, we found the place that made us happy. :D

A LOT of NJ police retire around Greensboro NC.

the base rate of sales tax in Washington is 6.5% but all of the counties and cities add on their share...we pay 8.9% in the city I live in...besides it gets cold and wet here in the winter and we do have some snow every winter...it usually doesn't stay very long...it is expensive to live on the west side of the state...I know I live here

Arkansas and Kentucky seem to be the lowest overall cost of living (including taxes) that aren't cold northern states. Iowa, and North and South Dakota are all a little cheaper, but all have a lot more snow and intensely cold weather.

We ended up in Tucson, Arizona. There's a song that comes to mind. We are both cyclists and my wife is a "serious" birder, so the area caters to our enthusiasms. Taxes are reasonable, but there still are some. I rationalize that the trade off is quality of life, which is higher than the taxes.

In my view, it is wise to become part of the community where you want to retire while you are still active and earning a living. We did that more than a decade ago, so now this area really seems like home. And, it is. :)

Here's the view from the street a few steps from our front patio. After living for decades not far from Philadelphia, we enjoy a "White Christmas" . . . so long as we do not have to shovel any of it.

My apologies if this is not as helpful as you would like. :o

Yup....not Washington. If she wants warm Arizona or Texas. Florida if she don't mind bugs.....our sales tax is about 10%, and we have the highest gas tax around.

West Virginia? West By God Virginia?

Are you nuts, man? Stay away from wv. Too cold and too many nut jobs in them there hills. Gas prices are ridic, as well.

Disclaimer: I'm born and raised in WV. Left after college in 1997 and don't even like to go visit! ;)

Mom liked Foley, Alabama. She was 2 miles of the gulf, in a recently built home. She weathered out 3 hurricanes (including Katrina), with just a few shingle tabs blown off. She came back up north to be with family and enjoys her condo, 4 miles from her kids and 45 miles from he brothers. When you are retired and comfortable, the weather isn't that big of deal. Ivan

florida has lots of options the farther south u go it gets warmer it gets. lots of land. can garden year round , no state income tax. if living inland property is reasonable in good neiborhoods and driving to beach is a breeze , if u dont like salt water ,thats y they call it the state with 10,000 lakes lots to do but thats up to you. oh forgot to mention gun friendly state lot of gun ranges

I'm retiring and heading to Mesa, AZ in 34 days, but Arizona is too far west for her. I bet she'd like Florida.

When she gets to wherever she's going, the best thing she can do to develope new friends is get involved with a church.

There is no place like home and family---from experience.
Find a retirement village near.
NOW---Texas is a fine place but she will go back home.
Blessings

Well I have no idea where the cheapest would be but after the last week here in Boca Raton Don't even THINK about Florida. South Froida FOR SURE. I meant it. Prices are crazy here. It's very scary and I'll be happy, in a way, to get back to the other side of the tracks. ;)

We have a lot of retirees in our neighborhood in Simpsonville, SC. Many are called "half-backs." They moved to Florida from the northern states...but then, for a variety of reasons (heat & humidity for sure), they moved halfway back...and landed in SC.

I live in Florida and even I wouldn't go near Boca Raton or Miami for that matter.
