Lyman 358477 (357 Magnum)

Per Alliant, do not use magnum primers with 2400. The "t" is a multiple in some cases 😃

...didn't have to trim down to 1.280"...checked the brand new Starline cases which I used and they are already 1.280" 👍

No, you do not need a mag primer for 2400. Just that you made 2 changes to the recipe so it was not to a "t" It least not a capital T.:D
As mentioned in another thread,(and here) if the bullet seated to the crimp groove, I see no reason to go over it.? It was mentioned for the heavy bullets 170 or so that will not fit the cylinder.
However you do like to experiment with "stuff":)

I just checked the Alliant Data . They show a max charge of 4.7 grs of Bullseye powder using a 158 gr cast bullet in a 357 magnum case . In the Speer #14 manual , they show a max charge of 4.8 grs using a 158 gr cast bullet . Using jacketed bulllets Speer 14 shows no load data for Bullseye powder or titegroup . Hodgdons shows a max of 5.0 grs using Titegroup with a cast 158 gr bullet . A max of 6.0 using jacketed . Regards Paul

I'm sorry Paul but you are looking at Speer, who now owns Alliant, data
not real Alliant data. My last genuine Alliant manual lists Bullseye at 6.5
grs with an unspecified 158 gr lead SWC at 33,900 psi and 6.8 grs with
a 158 gr JSP at 33,100 psi in the .357 and with the hot Federal 200 SRP.
Lyman #4 Cast Bullet manual lists 7.0 grs Bullseye with the 358477
cast SWC at 36,900 CUP which is the lowest pressure of any max load
with this bullet. They also list 7.0 grs with their gascheck 158 gr SWC
at 39,400 CUP which is again the lowest pressure max load for this
bullet. Lyman used the CCI 550 primer for all .357 loads. For real
Alliant powder data you have to look at the original Hercules and
Alliant manuals.

alwslate , no apology necessary . You simply have load data that I don't have . I have some of the older Speer manuals but nothing listing your published loads . thanks for the update and references , regards Paul

Many of old standby loads give some people the vapors these days . Tons of tested data out there . For cast loads with a LY bullet the older Lyman , RCBS , IMR & Alliant data abounds . Have loaded for 357 for years especially with cast & I've never used any powder faster than SR4756 or Unique . Some bullets shoot better than others , plus not all guns like the same old . I've found it's harder to find a good accurate load with a plain base than a gaschecked if one is pushing it . As always fit & lube is paramount if one expects good results . Many good accurate powders for the 357 . I've had success with H110 / W296 , 300MP , 2400 , N110 , 4227 & Enforcer / 4100 . I load mine for field use & for paper punching I use one of my 38 special or 45acp target pistols . If you're happy with accuracy , power of your loads keep with it . I consider the 357 on the light side for hunting so for me accuracy with velocity is my goal . Bullet placement regardless of caliber is the objective . No ethical person willing takes an animal unless reasonably sure of a good shot . Handgun I limit to 50yds in 357 , rifle can extend that with more velocity & better accuracy . Bigger magnums will also extend range .

I'm sorry Paul but you are looking at Speer, who now owns Alliant, data not real Alliant data. (post 23)

Yeah;
I don't trust all that new data stuff either.

That is why my loads are all put together from my manual by..............

wait for it...................

Hercules. :D

The Lyman bullet 358477 is a design I have never owned the mold . Guess I'm too much of a " Skeeter " fan for my favorite has always been Lyman 358156 . The Ray Thompson bullet with 2 crimp grooves . Years ago I had Tom @ Accurate Molds make me 2 / 4 cavity molds of that design w/o the gas check after shooting the gas check design for an eternity . My 2nd favorite is the Lyman 358429 ( Keith swc ) of 173 grs . For mid range loads , instead of Unique I use WSF . For top end I like 2400 best , followed by either Accurate powder co. #9 or 4100 / Ramshot Enforcer . I don't routinely buy latest load manuals . Older Speer has always been my reference , when possible . Regards Paul

I've always considered the lighter 358477 more for pests & the HP is explosive when pushed hard . 358156 is a very good design & quite accurate , IMHO more forgiving than the heavier 358429 . For my use I like the Keith bullet or the LBT / NOE 180WFNGC . The heavier slugs also work well all the way to 357 Max velocity .
