M and P 38 manuf date

Friend has a pristine 4" M and P, unfortunately no box or docs. matching magna grips, serial # S976XX. Can I get an approximate manufacture date, and ball park value. Gun was his father's. Thank you.

I think you might have left out an "X" there. S976XXX probably shipped in early 1948.
