Well apparently my new barrel will not fit the Smith factory bolt.
So I can replace the bolt but, will a new bolt fit the Smith carrier or do I need to replace the carrier too? Will a new carrier fit the receiver? Little disappointed in Smiths decision to make their parts proprietary but, oh well it is what it is.

Post the details about your barrel, I've dropped in a new Ni Boron BCG from Shadow Ops Weaponry and it fits perfectly, so if a DPMS / SR25 BCG will fit the Barrel, I would think a DPMS / SR25 Barrel would fit our BCG.

My new barrel is a Shilen Match and the Smith factory bolt will not fit. A DPMS bolt will fit but the Smith bolt will not fit a DPMS barrel extension.

HDDP, I am assuming that the Shadow Ops Weaponry BCG you installed was DPMS spec one? If so, does it fire and function properly.
My son and I compared a DPMS to a S&W, and they do not appear to be interchangeable. I don't doubt that you can drop a DPMS BCG in a S&W, but I think it is unlikely that a S&W BCG would drop in a DPMS, mainly due to larger locking lugs on the S&W. S&W states that their BCG and barrel extension are proprietary. I would love to get ahold of a S&W barrel extension so that I can have other caliber options.
The following pictures are of the bolts, they don't show the differences in the locking lugs as well as I would like, but they are obviously different when viewed in person.

While the BCG might fit in there, from what I have seen, the headspacing is going to be off.
The DPMS bolt is longer overall. The lug shaping is a little different. As Prairie pointed out, the DPMS will likely fit, but S&W bolt will not fit the DPMS.

Hate to say it, but this is the Achilles' Heel of the entire 308/ AR10 line of rifles. No one could 'agree' to commonality.
I really doubt there will be a large aftermarket segment for these barrels, so one would be pretty limited on choices and options.

I'm afraid I just don't understand this. Maybe I'm just old or somethin'. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would spend between $1100 & $1600 on a brand spankin' new rifle and immediately begin looking to put a new barrel on it. Personally, if I thought I'd have to do that, I'da never bought the sucker in the first place. I'da spent that kind of money on a custom made rifle at my gunsmith's shop. Needless to say, I spent my money on a new M&P10 because I thought it was the best factory built 308 AR out there for my purposes. Why would I then immediately start changing out substantial functional parts on it. Stocks, forends, sights, sling attachments, etc are all personalization points, but barrels, bolts, barrel nuts, they're functional aspects of the gun. For that kind of dough, they outta be fine from the factory. Just sayin', why????

.308 caliber AR's are basically proprietary. DPMS is becoming the standard, but so far there is little commonality between brands.

Piston AR's are also all proprietary.
