I'm very interested in picking up an m&p for hunting and I am curious about recoil. I've never shot a 308 AR but I have shot a FAL and Browing BAR in 308 and they didn't bother me. My regular hunting rifle is a 9.5 lb with scope, model 70 and I don't enjoy shooting it at.

Is the M&P relatively pleasant to shoot? I've already looked into the limbsaver pad for a magpul stock but would like to stay away from putting loud brake on the gun.

I think it's pleasant to shoot, yes. I've never found .308 to be hard to tolerate on recoil. I have an M&P 10 and a SCAR 17S and both of them shoot relatively softly, I think. I don't have brakes on either rifle but that's certainly an option if you want to soften the recoil even more. Personally, I find brakes on .308 to be way more obnoxious than the recoil, but I understand that this is all subjective.

It's a pussycat, particularly in comparison with my 22" Model 70 at about 9 pounds which belts me pretty well in prone. And that's with full loads using the 168 grain Sierra Match Kings in both guns. Although subjective, it's also noticeably milder than the M1 Garand and even the M1A, both of which are just plain fun.

It's a different type of recoil. A bolt rifle kicks once, sharp and quick, but only backwards. A semi/ AR kicks back, then throws forward. And its' much more noticeable on the 308 vs. the 223.
The recoil itself is not much about anything. I rather prefer the recoil of a bolt rifle far better; one kick and it's done.

When I was looking for an .308 AR hunting weapon I read this forum along with two others and read as many possible reviews on the M&P 10. Recoil is a subject that really is according to the individual. I'm 5'6" 200lbs, my 15yr old son is 5'5" 135lbs. The weapon is in original form. We both love shooting it. My good friend is 5'9" 245lbs, and says it kicks like an Army mule! As for OOB* I do not have a KD course available, but have it sighted in at 50yds. Shoots great. My main target of opportunity are pigs and whitetails. When it is all said and done, it's how you feel about it. She'll be your puppy to pet or kick! :D

I recently picked up a MP 10, having previously owned a M1A and a DPMS optics ready .308. Although the recoil is more noticeable than the MP15 in 5.56, it is pretty soft shooter considering it's light weight. I don't understand why anyone would say it kicks like a mule unless they have some type of medical issue with their shoulder. It seems softer shooting than a M1A to me. Like someone said above, it does seem to be subjective to the particular shooter.
