M&P 15-22 Safety alert from S&W

Did either of you receive a confirmation email?

No, just had the acknowledgement that they had received the request. I presumed that the mail would be sent once the gauge has been dispatched.

This morning, I took my stripped bolt into the Inspection Department at work where they have a very large computerized measuring machine (CMM) that's calibrated to International standards.

Long story short, measured at three different points in the recess, the recess in the bolt face (mine anyway) is 0.0388".

It might be worth noting that the rifle was bought new last August and has fired about 800 rounds with no problem other than when I didn't fill the mag correctly.

All I have to do now is wait to see what the Go/NoGo gauge thickness is.

Iain

SAAMI specs for .22lr are 0.043"min-0.051"max so it'll be interesting what the gauge is. (Page 14 in link below)

Do tell me if I am wrong, it appears the rim sits partially within the "rim recess" in the chamber. Surely this has to be taken into account when measuring the bolt recess.

"Not that I am casting aspersions on the fine members of this forum"

And then you go on to do exactly that. Yeah you're a lawyer alright...Not that I am casting aspersions on lawyers or anything. :D
This forum has about 2000 active posting members none of whom, at least to me and judging by their posts, fit into the category of purchasers I mentioned. This board is composed of knowledgeable gun enthusiasts. The universe of purchasers of the 15-22 is quite a bit larger and I suspect contains a fair sampling of the individual described. If I was advising Smith on how to treat this, I would tell them the same thing I posted here and ask them if they are willing to take the chance that the general gun-buying public is intelligent enough to remedy the problem themselves and that nothing is gonna slip through and bite them on the backside. They have made a dollars and cents decision regarding that possibility vs the costs of recalling all of the weapons themselves and have chosen their course of action. Yea I'm a lawyer and I make my living thinking about things like this and advising clients accordingly as it is wayyyyy easier to avoid stepping in a pile of dog poop in the first place rather than stopping to clean it off ones shoes.
Lighten up Francis

I called the recall hotline and was asked my serial number. The woman was very nice and the conversation was very short. I was told they would be sending me a shipping label to send my bolt back for replacement. I made that call 3-11 and have yet to receive anything but they don't call it snail mail for no reason.
Like I said I had read about this problem shortly after I bought mine about 8 years ago. I am surprised it took this long before S&W did something about it.
I inserted a 22lr cartridge into the bolt and I have to say the shell casing head ring does sit very close to the bolt surface. I would think it wouldn't have to get very dirty before it might have a seating problem that could cause malfunction firing problems. I hadn't had any malfunctions with mine but I seldom shot a few full mags at a time with it either.

ORDER THE TOOL, "FOR A FRIEND"

Just cuz I'm paranoid don't mean That I want to end up on a LIST of 15-22 owners. I bought mine LEGALY FTF (here with no background check) from one of our clubs RO's. NO PAPER TRAIL & would prefer to keep it that way. Thoughts??? Just measure the bolt face myself???

You could after someone posts up the measurement(s). Being that you posted about having one on the internet, you pretty much let the cat out of the bag. Running your serial number at this point wouldn't make a difference.

And over 3000 posts on the M&P 15-22 forum wasn't really a clue to ownership was it? No offence intended my friend :)

Following on from getting my bolt recess measured at work, then reading the SAAMI specs (many thanks for the link Blackstuff), I went back to Inspection this morning and got it re-measured just in case a mistake had been made.

With the bolt face toward you & extractor claw on the left, I got the following in the recess;

at 9 'o' clock – 0.03855"
at 6 'o' clock – 0.03878"
at 3 'o' clock – 0.03886"

Looks like mines going to be a failure but if that's the case, I'm struggling to understand why she's performed flawlessly. I guess I've just been lucky. I'll see what the gauge says when it gets here.

I've just had another thought........my bolt is fitted with a non-original firing pin & extractor claw which weren't cheap :(.

Looks like the dealership will be getting mine back fully stripped rather than as a complete unit :p.

Bolt Inspection Gauge order page not working

Trying to order the Bolt Inspection Gauge, and I can't complete checkout. Anybody else having issues? I just get the spinning thing when I click "Go to Checkout". I turned off my Adblocker and tried several times with no luck.:mad::mad:

Got my order confirmation from SW today. Said they would provide shipping updates when available. For reference, I ordered the gauge on Mar 8 when the notice appeared.

UPDATE.

Just got my "Go/No Go" gauge in the mail today. (w free M&P decal in package if that's of interest to you.) It's metal and fits the recess in the bolt face precisely. At first, it looked like I had an issue with the gauge sitting proud of the bolt face then I realized that I has some residual wax build-up (from CCI ammo) in that crevis. Not much, but enough to throw the gauge off until I scraped it out with a tooth pick.

BTW, the gauge measures 0.036" thick on my calipers.

FWIW,
I measured mine yesterday: 0.043 - 0.045 in. was the bolt face recess depth I measured. I think I should be good. Waiting on the S&W gauge to confirm.

Interesting I think you measured in inches as I measured mine and got 0.039-.0405". And I also measured the gap on the barrel end and bolt through the ejection port and got 0.0015 with and without a casing in the chamber (no change). Note that the area around the chamber on the barrel is slightly proud of the rest of the barrel face (not sure exactly what the area is called) and it does make full contact of that area that is slightly proud with only a slight gap around the edge of the bolt face. If I took the barrel off and was able to measure how proud that area was my bet is the 0.0015 I measured with the bolt closed through the ejection port. So if anyone has noticed a gap there I believe its normal.

Yes, I measured in inches not mm. Corrected my post, thanks. Ha!
