I rented a M&P 2.0 yesterday and liked it so much that I bought one.

When I got it home, I realized that the slide doesn't lock back on an empty mag.

I removed the slide and pushed the slide stop up. It takes a fair amount of force to make it click up.

The real issue seems to be that the detent is too stiff.

Ideas?

Mine went back for a similar issue. They replaced the slide stop. Perhaps, if you haven't fired it and have a good relationship with the shop, they'll just replace the gun.

Well shucks, that is what I didn't want to hear. This makes only the second firearm I have purchased at that store in the last 13 years, so it isn't like I am a regular customer.

I was hoping I could either relieve the detent with a file or tweak the detent spring.

Edit to add: I haven't fired it yet. I will give the store a call tomorrow, but I have a feeling they will punt to S&W.

Jeppo's law, "You don't ask, You don't get". All the store can say is no.

The better news is that S&W made the experience relatively painless. The most difficult part was waiting on hold. Once CS answered, I had a return label in about an hour. From the time I shipped it to having it back in hand was around 4 weeks. YMMV

By the way, I guess it would be easier for the store to say no by phone than to your face. I would take it there, show them the issue and ask for help.

I've never seen a shop do this. They may offer to ship it to S&W for you but they are not going to take it back and swap you another one after it has been transferred, in my experience.

Shoot it and see if you have an issue. It will likely loosen up a bit after shooting. I've seen some of the new 2.0's have really stiff slide locks and others not so much. New Shield 2.0 I recently picked up was stiff but started to loosen up a bit during the first range session.

Try a drop of lube on the detent spring and work it several times. It may just be dry. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember the manual says that the detent spring where it hits the slide stop is a lube point. May save you from having to send it in.
