Does anyone know why I would have problems shooting federal bulk hollowpoints? I've been shooting the RN and never had a problem. Why the difference with hollowpoints?

Several people, including me have had this same problem with Federal Champion 36 grain HP bulk ammuntion. It has a very wide round to round deviation and some empty cases barely eject from the gun and doesn't push the slide back far enough to pick up a new round. It doesn't do it all the time, but some boxes are worse than others. I used a chronograph with my M&P22 and where CCI Mini-Mag 36 grain HP had an average of 33 FPS deviation, the Federal Champion had 126 FPS average deviation. Of course, the Federal produced much wider groups too. At 25 yards, the CCI averaged 2.5 inches, wheras the Federal averaged almost 6 inches.

Also, both the M&P22 and the Walther P-22 are made by the same manufacturer (Walther) and they both share this common problem. I'm sure both guns have a stronger recoil spring than the Federal can handle, as Ruger's can handle this ammunition without any problems.

I personally spend the extra money on CCI Mini-Mag only. Not only is it consistant, which I need in Steel Challenge shoots and now unsanctioned IDPA matches, but it's much cleaner than some other brands. I put several hundred rounds through it today and cleaned it, but it didn't really need it. I've shot a couple of thousand rounds through it and have never had any malfunctions or stoppages except with Federal Champion ammo. One other issue: If I ram the magazine home during speed reloads, when in slidelock, inertia causes the top round to stick up.

The ammo you're using is probably not creating sufficient blowback energy to cycle your slide. Try CCI Mini-Mags or rounds with similar velocity.

I use to have issues with it.. I use too have 2 to 5 rounds of every mag not fire with that ammo most that did having insufficient power to power the slide to the rear all the way.. My bearch face was not flat. No issues with that ammo since it was fixed.. Gun runs better cleaner too.. I don't think I was getting a good seal with the rim of the round as my firing pin marks were not evenly flat from the rim. I had a good heavy impression mark that got progressively lighter as it reached the rim. if I was you I would run the gun with the good ammo, CCi mini mags would be a good choice for break in .. Some guns need 2000 rounds or more to settle in.. Then try the federal blue box JHP's 36gr your gun may run fine with them after a good settling in with good ammo.. George

Mine is fairly new, and so far has never had a hiccup with Federal hollowpoint bulk stuff. In fact, I haven't found anything it won't eat. Never once has it had any problem with any ammo. I call it my pistol that thinks it's a 10/22. :p

i have 4-5 thousand rounds ran through this gun. The first 1500 rounds were cci mini mags, they were available at the time. I just don't understand how the rn shoot and feed good, but the hollowpoints have all of these problems

First off the FMJ are heaver at 40gr and can power the slide back better. The JHP ammo are lighter at 36gr and may have trouble with powering the slide back.. i suggest you send you gun back to smith and Wesson explaining in detail whats going on with it.. I did my Owen smithing on my gun and would not recommend it to anyone who don't know what the issue is... You have that many rounds through it it should be run in.. You do clean it well right? If you have a local gun smith have him look at and if needed flatten bearch fact to barrel fit on your gun.. The the lower case holder has to be shortened just a tad to make up the difference in fit of barrel to bearch face after the fix.. Your gun should shoot most ammo after that powering the slide better and run cleaner too.. Mine does and I'm 100% happy with it now.. But S&W will fix it for free.. try them if you in no hurry.. sometimes there turn around time is good and their service is great! George

I would not want anyone to try they fix that don't know gunsmithing to some extent.. As you would be messing with head space no matter how small that would be and that's dangerous. I had posted the repair I did to my gun here somplace and suggested for the people that were not familiar with the terms and aspect of gunsmithing not try it.. I would not advise it unless your a gunsmith.. George
