Hi Guys,

Thinking of getting an M&P .22. Anyone want to share
any thoughts, positive, negative, so-so? Pretty sure the
new models are made at Springfield now, and rear sight
issue is solved. Opinions?

Don't own one but I did shoot one last weekend along with a Ruger sr22.
Both fired without failures.
Ergonomics are good on both as is accuracy, personally I preferred the M&P due to the striker fired trigger vs DA/SA on the Ruger.

I love mine. Accurate light. Great little plinkster. Only thing I didn't like was breakdown takes a few times to get it right.

M&P 22 Compact

I've posted these photos before, but I like them almost as much as the M&P 22 Compact.

A very fun gun to own! :)

A fun gun, and good practice for your 9mm M&P.
I have some .22 pistols that are accurate enough to hunt squirrels but this is NOT one of them. Mine's a plinker, not a target pistol.

Which is why I bought the Compact. It is thus far 100% on MiniMags and I do not recall a failure with other brand high velocity LR. It has even "broken in" to where it functions well with standard velocity.

I just wish I could get a trigger job on it.

Weighs less than a pound. I often carry it in a kydex Fobus paddle holster.

Very reliable.

Fits my hand very well.

Fairly accurate. (but not Model 41 or 17 accurate).

Terrible trigger. I grew up with some bad triggers --- this one is up there toward the top.

The rear sight is free to be compressed and the elevation adj. screw COULD move. A tiny part of a nitrile gasket under the sight solved the potential problem --- Mine is current production.

I'd buy it again -- it's fun!!!

I got mine @ Palmetto State Armory for $250.

I've had my M&P22 full size for about 3.5 years. Approx 2500 rounds through it so far. Yes it is made by Walther. It functions very well with CCI Minimags, CCI AR-Tactical, and Aguila SuperExtra. I have not had good experience with Federal ammo in this pistol … failures to feed and failures to extract about 10% of the time with Federal 22lr.

I’d like to see the full size made here. It’s close to the size and weight of a full size Centerfire. The Compact is too light. I need a M&P .22 to fill my M&P handgun collection. But I need it to be a Smith & Wesson; not a Walther.

In case anyone at S&W is listening. ;)

I have a 22c and it is TONS of fun to shoot, will eat anything, but the trigger leaves a bit to be desired.

My Taurus TX22 is larger, and the trigger is simply amazing right of the box, and will eat anything as well!

I have a full size .22. I use it for plinking and training in conjunction with my full size and compact .45. Haven't had any problems, though I run almost exclusively minimags. The only thing I don't care for is the fact that the safety feels like it's dragging through molasses. I haven't taken it apart to figure out why yet as it hasn't really affected me much while actually firing it.

Please allow me to provide a little background to put my opinion of the 22 compact in perspective. I am not generally into plinking pistols. My closest to a plinker is a Ruger Mk 2 on which I installed an adjustable rear target sight and a custom front sight which I fabricated to align with the rear as it has a tapered barrel. My first new purchase this year was a Performance Center 625 (which does not work. 2 - 3 misfires per cylinder. After an unsatisfactory go 'round with customer "service" I sent it to Clark Custom Guns and told them to make me a revolver out of it.) After that fiasco I decided on some fun. A Henry AR-7 survival rifle and a Beretta 21A Tomcat. As to the 22 compact...

A local gun shop reopened at a new location and I saw a 22 c in the case. It was brown which I did not care for. As my Dad used to say I had some money burning a hole in my pocket :D I ordered the 22 c in black and with the barrel adapter. I ordered a Tandemkross Game Changer Pro compensator and 3 extra magazines. By Wednesday this week I had everything in hand.

I read that S&W had made reliability one of the design goals for this pistol. I would say that they have succeeded. On day 1 I put a 550 round box of Federal 36 grain plated HP ammo through the pistol. This is the stuff which Walmart sells for $20. Absolutely no malfunctions! I have put another 250 - 300 through it again no problems. The cheap Federal, Federal Auto Match and ancient (ca. 1992) Winchester Wildcat. Unfortunately I do not have any crappy ammo as the Henry ate it all up.

After the 550 round test I field stripped it for cleaning. I was amazed how not-dirty it was. Some deposit on the breach/feed ramp area and some smoke dirt in the mag well and on the breech area of the slide. A quick wipedown with a rag dampened with Hoppes #9 and a few passes of a bronze brush through the barrel and it was done. A little lube and back together for more shooting.

Reliability and ease of service A+++

The grip is a little small for my large hand. But again it is a "compact." I CAN get a decent 3 finger grip. That said, I do find the grip a little slippery.

Racking the slide is VERY easy. I would like the slide stop to be a little more pronounced. From my early training shooting bullseye 1) get the grip on the pistol with right hand 2) insert magazine with left hand 3) depress slide stop with left thumb. I have never gotten used to pulling back the slide to release it.

The sights are OK. I am not a fan of white dot sights, especially when shooting for top accuracy.

The trigger... Not too bad but a little gritty. Definitely not a target trigger. It is OK for a plinker.

The magazine... Reasonably easy to load. The spring is rather strong. I pinch the plastic follower between my forefinger and thumb in order to retract it. After 55 magazine loads in a session my finger tips are still sore :( I think a little Dremel tool work will make a load assister out of an old Ruger loading tool.

A side note about the compensator. It looks really cool :) It is probably not necessary as far as recoil is concerned. However, it does add some front end mass - probably weighs as much as the plastic grip frame (at least if feels like it.) This helps to steady the pistol a little.

Accuracy... I had not worried about that up till now. I was simply blasting some steel targets while I function tested the pistol. This afternoon I decided to see what it could do. My best 5 group at 50 feet was 4 within an inch and the 5th shot pulled. But it was not easy with the trigger and not-target sights. This was using the cheap Walmart/Federal ammo.

All in all I am VERY pleased with my new toy. The most disappointing thing... the slippery grip. I had not noticed how slippery until I was examining the pistol while writing this post. I will have to do something to address this as it exacerbates the trigger pull.

The 22 c will keep me amused until my 625 comes back from Clark. It is due November 1. If it is as good as the "Light Weight Revolver" which Clark made from my 67 a few years ago it will be something to behold.

When I was looking for a 22 I watched videos on youtube of all the different choices. For the striker fired the S&W 22c is one of the good ones as well as the Taurus TX22

Since I already have a Mod 41 I wanted a hammer fired .22 so these were my choices and no regrets.

A Colt 1911 Rail (all metal weighs about 34 oz empty)
5" fixed barrel, very accurate! Made by Walther in Germany under licence from Colt to Colt specs. 10 and 12 shot SS mags.
This weapon is compatible with some of the 1911 aftermarket products.

Grand Power K22S Mostly all metal. 4 grip choices. 5" fixed barell. Comes std with threaded barrel
Made like grand Power's bigger guns. Very accurate.

Both of these 22s are full size pistols.

Getting back to the S&W M&P compact.. you may want to watch this video. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npZrvpb5V1c[/ame]

I have the 22 Compact and love it. The best feature is that it isn't picky about ammo. I don't think I've ever had a gun-related malfunction through thousands of rounds.

Ken,

Try this TALON Gun Grips for Smith & Wesson M&P Compact

I had a M&P .22, only thing I did not like was that the ejection port was on the top of the slide as well as to the right side. I was
constantly being hit with ejected casings, as they were coming straight back at me. Others with the same pistol, did not have that issue. Otherwise, it ran great.
