I've had one as a BUG/off duty gun for over 5 years. Mine replaced a 442, and I think it was worth the money to upgrade. They're a nice revolver, I think you'll be pleased with it.

If it feels like it "bites" a bit much with those grips there are some replacements that really smooth them out without being too large. I've been using a set of Uncle Mike's combat grips for a long time. I run those grips on all my revolvers except my square butt model 27. Also the Pachmayr Compacs are great. They give some cushion for the web of your hand against the backstrap.
I, too, carried an M&P 340 for a while. Didn't even mind the recoil with Magnums but moved to a 640 Pro and am happier with it. There's only a half pound difference in the loaded weight. I don't pocket carry, and I don't notice the difference in my Lobo Enhanced pancake.

Power to weight - can't be beat
M&P 340 no lock is my most-carried piece. Sights help justify the higher cost. All but disappears in a Desantis Nemesis front pocket holster. Got lucky to get the call from Craig Spiegel for grips one month after I bought it. Arizona Gun Leather makes a nice OWB pancake.

Interesting to read this. I find mine snags its front sight and does not want to come out of any of my Nemesis holsters (I have a few.) They work like a charm with regular J frame front sights.
An Alabama kydex is my preference in the pocket with this gun.

Alabama sounds like something I should try. No issue with Kydex / Scandium wear? Cheap enough that I should at least put one in the boxo holsters
Hmmm, I haven't had any issue with front sight snag. Mine exits the pocket smooth and slick. There is a small white 02 tag on the back that I assume is the size? I think I paid $12 for it online two years back. My favorite way to carry my favorite gun - nothing at all aggressive is implied when somebody has a hand in the front pocket.

There are always debates as to what is the best carry piece. The honest answer is, "the gun you will have with you". That is where the M&P340 really shines. Over the years I've tried a few different semi's but never found anything I could really say was comfortable in all circumstances. A few years back I bought my M&P340 from a fellow member. It is the easiest most comfortable gun I've ever carried. When ever I leave the house it's on me. It's just so easy to tuck into it's holster and forget all about. I don't have to wear special clothing to conceal it and it draws and re-holsters easily. It is not likely to be anyone's favorite range gun but for carry it will be there when you need it. I have be lectured about how my life is in peril for only having 5 rounds at my disposal. I find it interesting though that most of those same guys will seldom have their pistol on them because they are wearing the wrong jacket or something. These are great little guns. No frills or anything. Just the bare minimum to get you out of trouble and home safely.

Yup that's the one. Who knows? It may just be me.
I use the Nemesis for the J's with standard sights, so it's no problem.
I like the Alabama stuff. I have them for the J frames, a G43 and a G26.
I haven't noticed anything particular with the kydex. I suppose it may cause more wear than something soft, but these are tools, and I don't worry much about it. If it was really chewing the finish up I'm sure I'd feel differently.

I have been lectured by other members for the way I carry my M&P340. The holsters on the wrong side and the belt is looped the wrong way. But it is comfortable and unobtrusive. It can hide easily under a light shirt or even a slightly loose fitting t shirt. Also, I can drive all day repeatedly getting in and out of the car without ever noticing it. It draws and re-holsters easily without snagging. It does not restrict my movement at all. It may not work for a heavy set guy but it works for me.
