I am a very happy user of a stock 9mm barrel in my 40. Now the question is some people bad mouth it but I want to know if anyone first hand has had bad experience? I think its mostly just 9mm users who are jealous they didn't do it for themselves but if you personally have a horror story please share with us.

They only bad mouth it because you paid less money and you got a factory conversion.

I've had my Shield .40 converted to 9mm with a factory 9mm barrel since October or so. And i havent had a single problem with it functioning the way it should.

but they didn't pay for another barrel or more expensive 40 ammo.... I fail to see where the less comes in... I have a conversion barrel for my glock 23, but I got the gun itself for free...

Roughly 9000+ rounds of 9mm down the pipe in my M&P40 with factory 9mm barrel and I cannot think of a single issue of any kind that I've had. Actually, when I was loading 9mm into my .40 cal magazine sometimes the slide would lock back before loading the last round. using 9mm magazines took care of that though.

See Everyone I hear first hand success stories no negatives. Ya for the range you can use the 40 mags the only problem I had was locking back before last round but that's it and I solved that issue with 5 9mm mags and I have been nothing but happy :-) I still have to finish polishing up my 9mm barrel

I agree that those that are always trashing modifications to guns, are those that would never modify their guns. They preach that it is dangerous, will not function properly, and that S&W does not recommend it. But when so many have made this 9mm barrel in the 40 slide swap, with no issues, what more can be said. It works perfectly and it is safe. Enjoy the ability to train with lower cost/lower recoil 9mm ammo and then being able to carry with the more powerful 40 SD ammunition.

Or can carry some SD .357Sig Rounds I am soo happy I chose the 40 instead of 9 I kind of feel bad them :D

With so many mixed opinions I thought I would have at least someone have a true first hand account of something going wrong. Well so far only good has come from this stock conversion

The complaints always come from people that have paid double or triple for a 'conversion' barrel. They get buffaloed into believing a completely different company can make a better barrel for the gun than S&W can. They pay more then try to make themselves feel better by trashing your stock $65 factory barrel.

You will see someone jump now and point out how wrong I am, even though tens of thousands of rounds show I am right. :p

The other problems come from Storm Lake barrel users themselves. We have had many of them tell us in these threads that the SL barrel didn't work. Some were sent back, some were fitted by a gunsmith. I have never heard of a problem with a stock S&W 9mm barrel in a .40, but there have been a lot of problems with Storm barrels in .40's. AND they cost a lot more!

I ran a similar thread to this one well over a year ago and try as I might, I could never find a problem with using a factory 9 barrel in a 40. ;)

LOL. That's what I like to hear I am a proud user and your right it is all people feel like the got suckered so they try to justify it and ya at least we dont have to worry about getting it fitted by a gunsmith after just paying for something that supposedly converts it and is suppose to work. I love having a 40/9/357 Sig all in one gun and all I would rely on.

I will probably never buy a 9mm. Just get a .40 and a stock conversion barrel it seems most models are like that.

Not sure I'd go that far. Some guns you dont have a choice, like on less popular firearms with a very small market (thus not being able to change barrels). I have converted Glocks over, and they worked great. Unfortunately, the slide still says "40 cal" and Storm Lake is one of the only companies to make Glock conversions.

Plus right now as people catch on to the conversions, and the panic buying continues, most barrels are sold out and most magazines are 2-3x retail.

I'd still rather have just a 9mm. I can have 17rds vs 15, cheaper ammo, and I can get power close to that of a 40 with the right ammo (Federal +P+ 9mm has more "bite" than a 40 out of the same gun w/ a conversion). Not trying to start up the endless debate, and not hating on 40. Just an opinion.

And to answer your question, nope. No failures with a conversion.

I converted my shield 40 to 9mm also my mp40 and my mp40c to 9 all function flawlesly

That's a question I've been meaning to ask. Glad to know I can pick a size frame in .40 then get the additional barrel and magazines to add 9mm.

I'm on the fence between a M&P 40/9 FS next or a SD9VE then later a M&P 40/9 in whatever of the 3 configurations makes the most sense. Next gun will be to fill the "home defense" role as well as give me something that's bigger than .22LR to take to the range (currently have a M&P22, M&P15-22, and a Savage Mark II bolt action .22LR).
