M&P 45 FS or SIG P227

Just got my new MOE all tested and put in the safe and THEN I have to go and stop by my LGS on the way from Walmart. DAM them for being between me and Walmart and having that flashing Guns,Guns, Guns electric billboard sign:) So I walk in to look for just 5.56 ammo (I swear). And what in front of my wondering eye's should appear but a M&P 45 FS in FDE and a SIG P227 side by side in the case. So here I am with the FEVER again, I may need the 45 to protect myself from the wife if she finds out. Does anyone have both of these? I seen posts all over but I really like the back and forth here and I didnt see any threads on it so far. I know the M&P is lighter if I carry but there is something about a all metal 45 that just says hold , caress me, take me home. I see the light wear on tops of guides for my other M&P's and still wonder how long they will last versus a full metal slide rail.And I see basically a 50/50 opinion on various sites on which model has more felt recoil. Anyway, what the opinions out there, Pro's and cons? The price difference is not a issue, its only $350 between them, Sig is $810.

The Sig has a much better trigger, there is no way any striker fired gun will ever come close to it. Don't fret over perceived recoil, the .45 is a pussycat. If price is not an object and the ergonomics are good for you, then the Sig is the way to go.
 
I've owned several M&P 45s (various configurations) and two SIG P220s (one was a compact) in .45 ACP. I've never owned a P227, although I have owned several other P models in 9mm (P239, P228, P229, and a SP2022.)

SIGs are great guns, and I personally like the DA/SA action. For carry, though, I'd prefer the M&P 45 or even better, the 45c. Also, and this is just my personal quirk, I like the M&P line when it comes to detail cleaning because I can take out the striker without having to knock out roll pins, etc. SIGs are very easy to field strip, though, and are usually known for being accurate and reliable.
 
SIG Sauer makes a fine gun. I will never own one because they are not lefty friendly. Also, I'm not a fan of the DA/SA guns. I prefer something with the same trigger pull every time. So, I don't own a SIG, but I have shot them many times. Great guns, just not lefty friendly.

I do own an M&P 45 though. It is a great gun too. With the Apex upgrade it's almost as nice as the single action pull in the SIG. It's completely ambidextrous. So, if you ever have to use it with your support hand, it will still be easy to operate.
 
The SIG P series guns are very well fitted and finished, a step above the M&P series. Long term durability wise, you would think the metal frame pistol would win, but the proven durability of Glock's throws a doubt to that hypothesis.

It really depends on what trigger action and features you like, and how it feels in your hand.

I recently sold my M&P 45c as it was not all that accurate, and I just didn't like the trigger pull. Of course, that was just one example. I have shot and carried quite a few SIG's, and the P series usually have good, smooth DA pulls, and very good SA pulls, as well as very good accuracy. Reliability should be excellent with either.

I vote for the M&P....lighter,cheaper,made in USA, lifetime warranty, feels great in the hand, great aftermarket support.
 
as a SouthPaw who has never had issue with SIG Sauer pistols and owned many since 1987, I prefer the trigger of the SIG and it is also made in the USA along with a LifeTime warranty but my track record with SIG Customer Service is below 50% (although I haven't had to use them a lot)...

I have read that the P227 is similar to a P226 and that said, I much prefer the P220 for .45 ACP (or Super .38 :D) it is my favorite SIG pistol and the couple extra rounds wouldn't make me choose the P227 over a P220 I don't think...

M&P only because I've got three, am familiar with them. Nothing against the 227. I've fondled them at shows and a lgs, like them fine. Right now however, the Sig's beyond my pay grade.
 
I own both. If you're only buying one pistol make it the Sig. Hands down. My M&P45 suffered fail to feed issues right out of the box, and 500 rounds later. The Sig P227 was good to go and more accurate, no contest. I ended up installing the Apex extractor and custom fitting it in the M&P 45 before it would stop jamming. Fingers crossed still, but it seems reliable now. Still I would not bet my life on it. I've always loved S&W's in any flavor, but I was truly disheartened to see they let something like this slip through their QC dept. Both guns are made in the USA. The Sig just has a higher quality feel, fit, finish to it. I did put the short reset sear kit and fat trigger kit in it, just to customize it to my liking, but you don't have to do anything to it and it's still a great pistol right out of the box. Hopefully Smith gets the bugs worked out of the M&P45 in the future, but I can't recommend one today. If it's a poly striker fired .45 you're looking for, I'd have to recommend a Glock.

DA/SA is at best sub-optimal and serves no useful purpose except in the world of low functioning command personnel. SIG's QC has been poor to ghastly for several years, and new models of anything tend to have warts that only show up when used hard by a lot of people. Hamfisted's experiences described above are really unusual from what I have seen; as an example, Hilton Yam (10-8 performance) did some serious testing of the platform when they were pretty new and they worked well.
 
Doug M said put it very well. Sig has been riding their Swiss/German reputation for a while. They started going down hill around 2005. Most of their products were fine before that. They literally turned into high priced Taurus as far as I'm concerned. The only Sig I'll buy is one with German manufacturing.

I have the 4.5" 45 and I shoot it better than all of my other semi autos. If I take my time, I can put 20 rds in a hole I can cover with one hand at 20 yds, minus a flyer or two. I really enjoy the gun. While I dont have any experience with the 227, I have a 2013 226 and I am quite disappointed with what I got versus what I spent. I will stick with my poly guns from now on.

This! I'll also state a Glock 21 is a decent option... And if hell bent on striker fired an HK45 in LEM would be my choice, however if you're patient it's probably 1-2 years before HK releases it's striker fired .45 now that the VP9 will be hitting shelves within a month.

Well stated. I like my M&Ps, but my Sigs are outstanding.

The really cool thing is that you can't really go wrong with either choice.

I have the M&P 45 and 45c and I love them both. Topped off with Trijicon night sights and Apex DCAEK's, they're awesome.

I would imagine decking a box-stock M&P out with night sights and an Apex kit would keeps you under the box-stock price of the 227...that is if price difference is a consideration.

If not, I would pick the M&P for the simple fact that there's only one way to press the trigger...that DA/SA nonsense on the SIG has never appealed to me, no matter how pretty the gun. I tried to love a P226 once, just couldn't get used to that loooooooooooong stiff first shot than that transition to single action...
 
Hi Russ...

Not familiar with the Sig 227, but I did own a Sig 220. It was a good gun, but had some quirks to it. If I loaded 10 plus one in chamber, it would not feed the next round. I could live with that, not big deal. It was accuratea and dependable, but I sold it.

I now have two MP pistols. A MP 45 and MP 9. Best pistols I have ever owned. Both pistols are stock. Both are dependable as the day is long. Both shoot to POA, where ever the white dot is, that's where the bullet goes!

Let my shooting buddy shoot my MP45FS, ( he hates SW autos ). After shooting, he looked at me with a surprised look, said damm, great trigger and accurate!

Bottom line, get what you like! I will never sell my MP's though. Sadly in my state, Calif, they will be unavailable soon due to our microstamping requirement.
