I bought my son and I the M&P AR-15s and have enjoyed shooting them. He is studying to become a police officer and will get a good bit of time in class with his rifle. However, old dad does not get much time around the range anymore. Can someone recommend a good book on the AR-15 or two books.....one being a general information ...design, cleaning, takedown etc....and maybe a good second book on upgrading it. I would specifically like to understand the M&P but realize that may be too limited.

Thanks For the Help

My advice is youtube too. Definitely dont need to buy a manual on how to clean or disassemble. Not sure there is a book on ulgrading? Reading this forum or ar15.com might hell

+1, YouTube, this forum, and (if I'm not breaking any rules) AR15.com, will give you more info than you can imagine. You'll learn to sort through the chaff pretty quickly.

There's nothing really proprietary about Smith ARs to warrant S&W specific info.

Yup, YouTube and this forum is your best bet. Lots of knowledge and good advice here. JaPes (the little green man) is particularly knowledgeable and very helpful.

Your dad may be like mine was.He liked to read service manuals.Colt sends the M16/Ar15 manual with their Rifles so i would suggest doing a google search for a Printable version of that manual.Colt may have it on the their website.

If you google build your own ar-15 rifle you will find some hits to books that are available.

You can't beat this forum though, it's much better than any book you could get.

Specialized Armament

Mr Elmore is an expert on this M-16/AR-15 system. Surplus stores & Amazon.com will have military manuals too. Be careful on YouTube, not always the soundest advice.

Google "National Sport Shooting Foundation AR-15 Maintenance". You should get a result of a 30 minute +/- YouTube video that is an EXCELLENT primer on basic care/maintenance/tips.
