Sorry if this has been asked and answered, but I didn't see a thread for this...

Does anyone have any ideas about the production figures for the Pro .40? I've owned mine since September, and they have been on the marked for almost a year, and this is still not listed as production-legal for USPSA. I really have to assume that they have cranked out more than 2k units, but whenever I ask S&W I get a terse "no comment" sort of reply.

I really love the pistol, but a lack of aftermarket parts like magwells puts the gun at a disadvantage in L10, which is what I'm reduced to shooting. I have a friend who has one on order from a shop here in town and has been waiting for over a month. Either they are not producing the pistols, or they are limiting distribution for reasons which are unclear.

There are steps and criteria for a handgun to be accepted to the Production gun list.
  • 1. 2000 manufactured and available to the general public .
  • 2. No magwell attachments or external flaring of the magwell, the lateral internal width of the well may not be more than 1/4" wider than the lateral width of the magazine. The lateral width of the well to mean the narrow width where the mainspring housing is inserted, the lateral width of the magazine to mean the narrow side that faces the mainspring housing when inserted into the handgun.
  • 3. Must meet the criteria listed in the appendix of the current rule book as well as that listed above.
  • 4. The gun must be viewed by NROI prior to its acceptance.
  • 5. A production gun approval form filled out and signed and returned to NROI.
Suggest you contact NROI and see what step they are on, and what the holdup is. Might just be paperwork.

I'm not sure either. If you are shooting a local match it probably isn't a big deal.
My club is very relaxed. We would rather get more shooters involved or others to keep coming back so we are not militant on anything other than safety rules.

good luck

I asked NROI about this a couple of months back, and they confirmed that no paperwork had been filed. They also said that the process is very quick once they get the documentation from the company. It essentially involves updating the web page, so they said it would be done within a day of receiving the form.

Kind of surprised Smith is not pushing to get the M&P accepted by USPSA. I and many others use it in IDPA Stock Service Pistol class which is close to IPSC Production class. I would think this would translate into more sales for the company. Must be something more than paperwork.

I was surprised the the S&W Pro 40 was not on the list. Many of the M&P 40 cal models are. I mainly shoot a 9mm Pro which is on the list. I had some problems with a "dead trigger", failure of the sear to reset. I took out the Apex Tactical RAM and it appears to have been fixed. We will see at the next USPSA match. I shot the Pro 40 last month at a couple of matches, so I guess I was not legal. :o Still had fun. If not for this thread, I would not know I was illegal. Someone needs to get S&W on the ball.

Humm, I've been shooting my 40 Pro with a 40-9 conversion barrel & 9mm mags. In all reality that makes it the 9 pro again since S&W took the M&P 40 gun and converted it to come up with their 9mm production gun. The mere fact that I converted it back shouldn't be held against me...wouldn't you think?

USPSA Production Rules state:
"..aftermarket barrel which is of the same length, contour, and caliber of the original barrel for that model of gun."

Nice try, no cigar. Caliber conversion barrels are not allowed in Production Division.

Picky, Picky, Picky. :D

I sent an email to S&W asking for the 40 Pro to be put on the list. Had to try something. ;)

Hey, I usually load 140 grain lead TC down to power factor 140 in S&W 40. That's legal is it not?

I got this reply back from Don Degray at S&W customer service:

Ron,

If it was up to us in Customer Service it would have been on the list. Marketing makes the list and we don't have an input. So if it makes the list you will be ready for competition .

Don

Bumped to see if anyone can even FIND this pistol. I've been hunting around for a backup, and it seems like they don't exist anymore. Did SW pull the plug on this?

No. The customers bought them too fast and S&W is making more.
