M&P rebates and 10MM concerns

I've been thinking about picking up a 10MM pistol and with S&W coming out with rebates on a lot of their handguns, and in particular a $100 rebate of 10MM pistols, getting a new M&P 10MM for less than $500 is pretty tempting.

I'm just concerned about all of the problems that I've heard about concerning the 10MM from S&W. As with many firearms, a lot of people report that they're happy with their, but there are still a lot of people complaining about theirs.

I'm wondering if the 10MM has been out long enough for S&W to have addressed the problems.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it. I was very excited about the M&P 10 as well as the Sig X10. Reviews of both have turned me off. No, they haven't worked out the bugs. They never will. That's the pattern these days. It seems to me that if you are happy shooting the range ammo from the big manufacturers you will never have a problem. If you ask the gun to live up to it's full potential with heavier, hotter loads, you will be disappointed.

The modern business model states that there isn't a problem that cannot be denied away. See:

S&W M&P in 380

I have had zero problems with my M&P 10mm. Before that I had nothing but bad luck with the BG380. Probably the worst consumer product ever, for me.

I long ago came to the opinion that some people just can’t shoot some handguns, for some reason. All my life I’ve heard complaints about the 1911. Every single one I’ve owned has worked fine - for me. I don’t doubt that others have trouble shooting their 1911s.

Bottom line, I guess in this throw-away world you spend your money and take your chances. The train won’t stop for you to get off. You’ll have to jump. If you’re afraid you’ll have trouble with the M&P 10mm, don’t buy one. You probably will. :o

Like M29since14, I’ve had no problems with my 4.6” M&P 10mm. I wasn’t really into polymer striker fired pistols, so I hadn’t been paying attention to all the issues reported by owners. If I had, I might have hesitated in buying it. I just happened to be in my LGS to use the range and they one on the shelf. I liked the feel of it, so I pulled the trigger. I did have a smattering of FTFs and FTEs until I had it well broken in, but from about round 600 on, it’s been flawless. I’m up over 2K rounds through it now, and the only problem I’ve had is keeping the optic from loosening. I had to send it back to the mothership at about round 1.5K because I sheared the optic screws off. I had a quick warranty turn around and I’m back in business after buying a couple of items to ensure the optics issue doesn’t return.

It’s a personal decision and maybe a bit of a gamble, but I wanted to point out that a good majority of the M&Ps work well. That percentage should increase as time goes on.

After a short honeymoon period with my 4.6" model flawlessly cycling 40 S&W level range ammo, I started trying out the Underwood 200 gr. Hard cast ammo. I was having consistent failures to feed on the 3rd or 2nd from the last round in the magazine. I bought the M&P 10MM for a woods gun, not for self defense against 2 legged animals.

It was so obvious that this gun was under sprung from the factory, and was designed to run the lower powered SD ammo.

I had no use for this gun as an EDC with SD hollow points, so if it wouldn't cycle heavy full powered rounds, it was going to get ejected from my collection.

Rather than sending it back to Smith, I ordered a guide rod and uncaptured 22lb recoil spring from Wolf that was designed for the .45 fullsize, but fits perfect in the 10MM 4.6", and I ordered 2 extra power magazine springs from Springer Precision that were made for the 10MM 15 round mags.

So far I am at 80 flawless rounds of the Underwood 200 gr. The gun is running exceptionally smooth so far. I'm going to get my round count up to 250-300 without failures before I strap it on in the woods.

I purchased a S&W, M&P 10MM in mid December, shipped in Mid November.
I've only put 200 rounds down range to date. No problems with FTF or FTE.
No issues with magazines failure to drop. Did i get lucky or did S&W listen to the complaint? I don't know, but I'm keeping mine.

I’ll add that I still haven’t put any factory ammo through mine. Most of it has been 180 grain Berry’s plated over 10.0 and 10.2 grains of Bluedot. My latest batch, of which I’ve put about 250 or 300 rounds through, is 180 gr. Berry’s plated over 9.3 and 9.5 grains of Longshot.

I’m not sure I can handle those goofy tall sights. Looks like that front sight would get hung on clothing or a holster.

Ive run about 200 rounds thru my 4" 10mm. From hot handloads to low-end w231 loads, it has run everything so far with no issue.

1. No one gun is going to make everyone who shoots it happy. Most recently the CSX. A fine gun for its purpose, but not a target pistol. What other people like is not necessarily what you or I like.
2. We get the quality that we are willing to pay for. Overall, manufacturers have learned to repair or replace the defective product is cheaper than tightening quality on every product. Bad examples may get through of every model for any manufacturer.
3. The reason for rebates over price reductions, is the decreased likelihood of the customer getting the advertised price break. Even if you fill out the paperwork and send it in, things sometimes happen and or get lost by you or them.

My M&P 10MM has been just fine for months. I probably have less than 2000 rounds through it. It is an assortment of my hand loads and some Factory ammunition. It actually loves the SIG ammo which is a 180 grain at 1250 FPS so it is not a 40 load in a 10MM case.

You have to remember in these days if Internet, the folks that think they have been wronged by a Company will yell and complain to anyone that will listen.

Those of us that have no problems usually do not get on Forums and shout about it

There are many thousands of the M&P 10MMs out in the public, perhaps many tens of thousands by now but yes the dozen or so folks with problems will jump into every thread on any Forum to tell you how the Company is going to the dogs and won't acknowledge a "Known Problem".

Much like M29since14, back in the 70s and 80s I heard folks say that Colts would not work out of the box until you sent them off to a gunsmith for hundreds of dollars worth of work.

I currently own 19 different Colt 1911s, most of which were purchased new over the last 4 decades. Not one of them ever gave me trouble

…Overall, manufacturers have learned to repair or replace the defective product is cheaper than tightening quality on every product.

Over the last 20 years or so some pretty fanciful ideas have come along into acceptance in manufacturing quality, IMO. Most of these ideas are just a matter of people pushing principles they must have very little actual real world experience with, but because people are willing to pay them to consult on such matters, the material has become more and more mainstream, or so it seems to me. One of these quaint little notions is dispensing with final inspection. “Process control” and “in-process inspection” have (supposedly) negated the need for and the resulting expense of final inspections. I sometimes think these consultants may know a thing or two about statistics and probabilities, but are woefully lacking even a basic understanding of human nature. As long as humans are involved on the shop floor, somebody better have at least a modest understanding of it if they’re responsible for quality.

I agree, it only takes a few online complainers to hurt the reputation of any manufacturer's product. It seems that many M&P 10MM owners have had good luck with their pistol, but there are still many who have had problems and so far I haven't seen anything to indicate that the problems have been addressed.

As an owner of several M&P pistols, I've been very happy with the performance of all of them but I'm still reluctant to jump on the M&P 10 MM bandwagon for some reason.

I think I'll continue to check out some of the competition. I've seen a few complaints about the Sig P320 10MM and for some reason the Sig offering just doesn't do anything for me, even though I do own a couple of P320s.

So far I've heard nothing but good about the Springfield Armory XD-M Elite, so that one's still in the running and probably in the lead so far.

The new entry into the 10MM field that I may have to check out is the new FN 510. The FN has all the bells and whistles but is so new it's mostly untested and it is pretty expensive compared to others.

But for now the search continues.

Darn
I'm a week and half early on my second S&W 10mm (I wanted a 4" as well). That extra money would have helped pay for my 507c

I'm one of those that has had zero issues with my M&P 10mm 2.0. I purchased mine back in Sept., and have since added a Holosun 507C. My son (who manages several local gun stores) confirmed that S&W was issuing $100 rebates on all M&P 2.0s...I wish they had done that a couple of months ago!

If you really want to shoot cartridges that are operating at the top of their performance envelope, get a revolver. This is a massed produced, plastic framed gun chambered in a cartridge that is at the top of the list when it comes to bolt thrust and slide velocity. There are going to be problems that come with that until the laws of physics change. This is not a gun that I would use as a duty gun and that goes for the other 10mm polymers from Sig and Glock. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't get one to use as a range gun. Especially with the price now but you have to keep in mind the baggage that comes along with it.

I bought the four-inch 2.0 10 mm with two mags and with shipping, sales, tax, and credit card fees it was 609 dollars. So I’ll have a hair over $500 in it with the discount and feel it is worth the risk. My girlfriend says she feels very strongly about us having a gun for beer defense when we go backpack camping in Bear country. I bought a box of Sig 180 grain ammo to try out in it next week.
